Our number system is based on the base ten system. Each place value represents a power of ten. The rightmost number represents the ones place, with a value of 10^0, which is 1. The next digit to the left is the tens place, with a value of 10^1, which is 10. The hundreds place is to the left of the tens, with a value of 10^2; these powers and values continue.

To identify the place value, we must look at the position of each digit. We just learned that the digit furthest to the right is the ones place, to its left is the tens, then hundreds, and so on.

In the number 382, 2 is in the ones place, 8 is in the tens place, and 3 is in the hundreds.

Using expanded form is helpful to see the different powers and units in a number. For example, 472 in expanded form is 400+70+2. In written form, 472 is four hundred seventy-two. When we write out the number, we can see its powers.

We can also use base ten blocks to represent numbers in their expanded form visually and physically.
