Poland and America are nearly polar opposites. In Poland, they believe in having only what they need, while in America, they are very materialistic, and believe they need money to be happy. "The son asked one question after the other, but Berl's answer always remained the same: they wanted nothing". Poland is a very religious country, and America is not focused on religion all the time, they are more focused on when their next paycheck is, rather than when they're going to church. Lastly, in America they are constantly worried about crime, while Poland, being a smaller country, there is little to no crime.
"The son asked one question after the other, but Berl's answer always remained the same: they wanted nothing"

Some ways that we connected while reading the story " The Son From America," was, some of us grew up near farms or out in the country, just like Sam. A second connection we thought of was, some of us thought that money made people happy, but like sam when he realized, "this village in the hinterland needed nothing," We realized that we don't need money to make us happy.

Rabbi's are kind and generous, therefore the main character depicts an attitude such of a Rabi or important valued figure because of his upbringing (father is a Rabi). He brought gifts back to his home which signifies an attitude of a unselfish, magnanimous behavior that was expected and engraved in his values he was taught in the community that he was raised in.

The town of Lentshin has many different characteristics that made it the town what it is. The author was able to create a visual picture in our minds through how he described the town itself and the people which made it up. It is secluded and is like its own little world. It is a small town where everybody knows everyone, and no one tried to display that they had more wealth. They all have small houses and had similar animals and a plot for a garden. Through the story's detail we were able to visualize how the people act. They all are very religious, attending church weekly and all caring and knowing everything about each other. For example when "The neighbors had heard the good news that Berl's son had arrived from America, and they came to greet him(Singer 164)."

Predicting is something that we tend to do while reading stories without even noticing. We predict that in the story "The Son from America" Sam will return to America with a new perspective on life. We predict this due to him realizing that if you have close friends and family, you don't need money to be happy. In the story it says "But this village in the hinterland needed nothing". This supports what we predict, due to it showing that the village doesn't need money and wealth to be happy.

While many often cherish money, the people of Lenshin believe that they can find happiness without it. Berl and Berlcha live in a small village in Poland called Lentshin. They are not very rich, but can provide for themselves. Berl and Berlcha have one son, named Samuel who lives in America and is a millionaire. He sends money to his parents three times a year, but they never spend it. When Samuel visits Lentshin, he plans to shower his parents and the village of Lentshin with gifts, but decides against it when he sees how happy everyone is without the necessity of money. "He brought not only his own money but funds from the Lentshin Society in New York, which had organized a ball for the benefit of the village. But this village in the hinterland needed nothing" (Singer 166 There are six strategies that one can use to analyze a story, and I will be using connecting, predicting, and questioning.
