The massive amount of mass media portraying an ideal beauty causes people to internalise the standard definition of beauty and they take measures to attain the propagated ideal. This explains our fascination or even obsession with image and fashion, especially of celebrities. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Research suggests that “fitspiration” images in particular – which typically feature beautiful people doing exercise, or at least pretending to – might make you harsher on yourself.</div><div><br>Amy Slater, an associate professor at the University of West England, Bristol, published a study in 2017 in which 160 female undergraduates viewed either #fitspo, self compassion quotes, or a mix of both, all sourced from real accounts on Instagram. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1740144516305265"><strong>Those who viewed only #fitspo scored lower on self-compassion</strong></a>, but those who viewed the compassionate quotes (e.g. “You’re perfect just the way you are”) were nicer to themselves – and felt better about their bodies.</div><div><br>For those who viewed both the #fitspo and the self-compassion quotes, the benefits of the latter appeared to outweigh the negatives of the former.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Visual platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat deliver the tools that allow teens to earn approval for their appearance and compare themselves to others. T<strong>he most vulnerable users, researchers say, are the ones who spend most of their time posting, commenting on and comparing themselves to photos. </strong><br><br>The young are vulnerable to the effects of the media because they are <strong><em>seen</em></strong> as</div><ul><li>Innocent: they are still learning about what is normal, acceptable and true in society and the world around them. The media is able to shape their perceptions and beliefs especially with the high level of media penetration and consumption in modern life. </li><li>Impressionable: they have yet to form their own set of beliefs and moral standards, so they are more likely to respond emotionally to what is attractive and cool, and correspondingly, less likely to measure what they see, read or hear against codes of conduct and morality.</li><li>Naïve: they are less critical about the information and values they receive and are more likely to trust the media. This is because they lack the experience and maturity to question the truthfulness, morality and relevance of what they are exposed to.</li></ul>]]></description>
