Hi my name is Nadiya Shaffeal I truly believe that women gets trapped in violent relationships because, they are too in love to give up on one another and they may give chances and chances on that person. They may also think that person will change into a better person, also they may not want to leave that person if children are involved.
Infant, Toddler, Preschool, and School age
Physical - may encourage the child or children to be violent when they get older
Emotional - depression, fearful, very unhappy, anxiety, and speechless
Cognitive - may lower the rate of development for that child or children
Social - may make the child or children scared to be social around their parents
Domestic Violence has a huge impact on children because, they may be right there hearing and listening to everything that is going on and it isn't good or healthy for them to be in an environment like that. It may cause the children to have nightmares while they sleep. Children may also learn to do those behaviours as well and they can get caught involved in the middle of the situation.

I think women choose to stay because they have hope and believe that their partner will change. Some women may also not appreciate the idea of starting over with someone new. Also, these women may be truly in love with their partners and would not want them to be out of their lives. Although families play a significant role as to why they stay, domestic violence and abuse can also happen in relationships - young or old.

Joanna Bulandres

There are many reasons why women stay in an abusive relationship. Some of the most common reasons are children, society, conflicting emotions, fear and dependence on the (abusive) partner. Most women choose to stay in an abusive relationship for the sake of their children. So that their children have an easier life with both parents.
Societal pressure is another important issue in some communities, especially South Asian community. Divorce is frowned upon and society is not very acceptable of divorced women, even if they were in a toxic marriage. Therefore, due to society's prejudice and pressure, women choose to stay in abusive relationships. Some women may choose to stay with their abusive partners due to their conflicting emotions about their partner and the relationship. They are torn between the abuse and the love. Women may even stay in abusive relationship because of the fear of their partner. They may be afraid that their partner might harm them if they decide to leave. Some women may also be financially dependent on their partner and therefore cannot leave their abusive partner.
Children suffer from domestic violence whether or not they are the ones being abused. Children who witness domestic violence may become anxious and fearful and feel worthless and powerless in front of others or authoritative figures. They may feel inferior or vulnerable in social settings. Children may not feel safe at home. Children from these dysfunctional families may be in emotional pain. They may directly or indirectly be physically affected by domestic violence.

There are so many reasons why women stay in a domestic violence relationships to name couple of the reasons, victims believe that their partner loves them and what they do it’s because of the love they have for them and as women we have that tendency to think that the person will change which will never happen. Also, women may decide to stay in a domestic violence relationships if their partner made a threat to the victim that if she leave him or report him, he might kill her, himself and the children or hurt her family because of that threat they have no choice other than to stay in relationship because they want to protect themselves and the people they love and they might not tell anybody about their situation they are in. This also could be a psychological problem because their partners brainwashed them by making these women believe in their head that whatever their partners is doing to them it’s their fault and they deserve to be treated that way and that's why they can't leave. Also, It could be a cultural ,religious and beliefs that divorce is not an option for them and for the sake of their children.
Neema Jacob

Abuse can happen to different women's lives no matter if you are educated or not. Handling, isolation, verbal aggression and passive aggressive behavior do not leave any physical scars that others can see. The abuser often denies his abuse and tries to put the blame on his victim. This form of violence erodes the meaning of the victim's value and judgment. It is almost a form of brainwashing that keeps a woman related to the person who causes her suffering. The most compelling reason women remain in abusive relationships is because they are afraid. The aggressors are all over control, and often when a woman exercises control over her own life, violence increases. An aggressor could threaten to harm or even kill her partner if she tries to leave. Or it could threaten to harm family members, take children away, or spread terrible rumors about his partner. When a woman fears for her safety, the safety of her children or her family, or her own reputation or her life, staying in the abusive relationship feels like the only alternative. Leaving an abusive relationship is much more difficult when children are involved. A woman might feel unable to support her children alone, or she might fear for the well-being of her children and safety if she leaves. She might experience guilt about taking her children away from their father or breaking the family. There may be threats from the aggressor that he will turn the children against his partner if she leaves. In addition, he could get joint custody of the children, and she is afraid to leave them alone with him. Or she wants to serve as a buffer to protect her children from the anger and violence of her aggressor.

She might feel that she is not good enough for someone who treats her with kindness, with love and respect. Or she might have a brainwashing by her partner to believe she can not cope without him. Some women feel that the familiarity of abuse is better than the unknowns of life outside the relationship. Things could be worse than the aggressor. Feeling ashamed of abuse is another reason why women remain. They do not want to expose abuse and their own tolerance to friends and family by leaving their partner.

For some women, an abusive relationship feels normal. They assume that all intimate relationships involve some form of physical or psychological violence. They may have grown up in a violent family and watched as their father abused their mother. Children do not have the mental or emotional abilities to cope with the pain and mixed messages they receive in a violent household. They convey this disarray into their grown-up lives and wind up picking accomplices who rehash the curved flow of their youth encounters.

An abusive relationship can begin a romantic relationship. A woman might fall in love with a caring and kind man whose trends of control and violence only show up later in the relationship.

The aggressor is not always a "bad" person who is completely wrong. The abuser may have been the victim of abuse himself. He may have low self-esteem or not know how to handle his feelings of anger, shame or confusion.

The aggressor could show just enough of her "good" side that her partner is hoping that he will finally change and realize how much she loves him. She knows that a good man is under violence and control.

A victim may also have cultural or religious beliefs that prevent him/her from leaving the relationship. She might feel her extended family or religious community going shun or ashamed if she leaves her aggressor. Or she could have a disability that makes her feel completely dependent on her violent partner.

A woman may feel financially dependent on her abuser, especially if she controls her access to money and if she is the primary breadwinner in the family.
He could threaten to cut her and the children completely if she terminates the relationship, leaving her destitute and homeless.
If she is not able to work or perceives she does not have the skills or ability to make money, the victim feels trapped and helpless. This is especially true for women who do not have family members or support friends available to help her make the transition out of the relationship.
Having no place to live, no job opportunities on the horizon and no access to bank accounts, the woman see no choice but to stay with the abuser.

Battered women who continue with their partners are moved by love or fear. There are several reasons why the victim can not easily get out of an aggressive relationship. Sometimes the victim believes that her partner really loves her or that the problems that are happening can be a phase. Many women to ease the situation say that when the partner is in good time he manages to be a good husband and a good father. What the victim can not see is that this was not meant to be just a moment and that bad times are probably much more frequent.

In many cases, the abuser threatens the victim by saying that he or she will kill her or assault her children if the woman reports or tells someone about the assaults. Children may be directly or indirectly affected by domestic violence. Even though they are not physically assaulted, children who witness domestic violence experience enormous emotional trauma. These children may feel helpless because they can not help their mother, for example, who sees her being constantly assaulted and threatened.

Such aggressions long before they become physical may have begun verbally causing emotional damage to the victim almost irreparable. The victim is cursed and listens all the time that is worthless, having her physical appearance mocked and her intellectual abilities overlooked. The victim begins to feel useless, undeserved, ugly, unattainable, and start to believe that even with everything that is happening it is better to stay as it is because they will not be able to find another person who wants her.

Apart from this, in many cases the victim does not have support from the family, the lack of financial resources especially if the victim has children becomes a reason to stay in the relationship, several elements come together and create a wall of isolation that the victim herself builds and does not can break without help.

Another reason we should take into consideration are the culture and religion factors that in some cases the divorce is not well seen or even not accepted.

It is sad to know that there are millions of women worldwide suffer from domestic violence. Unfortunately, several of them keep staying in that abusive relationships. There are many reasons why they are trapped that are listed below:

- Financial dependence: A lot of women decide to stay with their abusive husband because they are financially dependent on their partners. They are unable to make money and support themselves and the child’s living if they separate from their husbands/partners

- Culture/Beliefs: Even until now, many cultures value men above women. They would believe that when women go through a divorce, it is the women’s faults and she is “a waste” because her husband throw her away. Hence, a lot of women are afraid of that ideas of being seen as “trash” or “useless”. They do not want to be a shame to their families. Moreover, due to their beliefs, many women think that it is completely normal for a man to be abusive because he is the dominant of the household. Therefore, they accept to be physically and mentally abused by their partners

- Lack of supports: Unfortunately, several women do not receive any support from their family, friends or the society. They are not supported physically, socially, emotionally and financially. What even worse is that they are shamed by their surrounding for leaving their marriage. Often, these women would stay trapped in their abusive relationship.

- Children: Usually, the mother instinct inside the women urges them to stay with the violent marriage because of their children. They want their children to have both father and mother and receive the best from them. They worry that once they divorce, children’s emotions will be affected.

- Being threatened: Many women are afraid of leaving because their safety as well as their family’s safety is threatened. Also, some women do not have the custody of the child/children due to the lack of power. The husbands might also use children as the reason to manipulate those women. The men might prohibit the women from seeing their children. Hence, women are forced to stay in the violent relationship

When domestic violence happens, children from all ages are significantly impacted.

- Physical: Children at a younger age will most likely intake those violent behaviour once they witness it and portray it at school, which makes their physical behaviour more aggressive. On the other hand, another possibility is that children might get physically harmed when they try to stop their dad from hitting their mom.

- Emotional: Children might become introvert when they witness their parents’ violence. They might feel depressed, confused and become more aggressive in behaviours. Their self-confidence and self-esteem might also be lower.

- Social: When children’s emotion is influenced and they might become introverted, they might be afraid to make friends and communicate with their peers. Also, since their behaviours might be more aggressive, it is harder for them to make friends outside the house. This is a disadvantage for them because they cannot develop their pro-social skills.

- Intellectual: Children who suffer or witness domestic violence might have their brain affected. At the same time, because they are emotionally unstable, it is hard for them to focus and process information in class, which can affect their academic performance.

Tran Phuong Dan Vy - 300822030

Sometimes abusive women do not feel that they are trapped in unhealthy relationship because they don’t have any self respect or self confidence on themselves. Even they do not know how to protest violence as to improve the relationship. Some common reasons are as follows:
•	Loving and caring attitude
•	Dependence of living costs
•	Parenting
•	Religious reasons
•	Fear of breaking relationship
•	Used to live in the violent environment
Children in the different ages and stages passed hard and difficult time because of their parent’s unhealthy relationship. It effects their whole growth such as physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. They can suffer from physical injury caused by their parent’s aggressive behaviour. They can be neglected which effect negatively in their emotional development. Because of the bad home environment, they can not put concentration on their education which makes them unsuccessful in their life. They also become aggressive and less trustworthy citizen which is inappropriate for the society. So, to protect the children for their bright future, we should work altogether to stop domestic violence.

Asma Akther: What keeps a woman trapped in violent relationships?Breaking up can be more difficult for an abused woman than it appears. There are a variety of reasons why most of the women are continuing the violent relationship. First of all, in our society, we find some women have lack of knowledge, there is no right to abuse anyone; divorce or separation is a social embarrassment; even in the twenty-first century, some culture believe that women need to stay under the men’s control and religion believe also do not allow breakup the relationship. So that, uneducated women are more suffering tolerant from domestic violent. Women’s low self-esteem is another vital reason that endures a woman to continue the cruel relationship. Low self-esteem develops when a woman does not have any financially independence, and no power in life. Most of the abused women feel economically insecure when they decide to leave the abusive partner. They may be afraid of how they will survive without partner’s support. Therefore, they agree to stay in the violent situation. In addition, it Is very common scenario in our society that women do not want to escape the violent situation only for love. They are very caring for children, and even the abusive partner too. Moreover, they feel that the rude partner will be changed by any chance. Thus, they accept to enduring the fearful life.Beside the abused women, the domestic violent has very negative impacts on children’s life who is witnessing that. The effects are connected with physical, social - emotional and intellectual problems and continue childhood to adolescent. A child grown up by witnessing domestic violence may become aggressive, anxious and fearful and can be grown up with low self-esteem. Also, can develop headaches stomach aches and other physical. While children witnessing domestic violent, they may not concentre to their task, higher risks of alcohol/drug abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, it is also the number one reason children run away.

Cindy Chen：I think some the reason the woman trapped in a violence relationship because their partner have control over something that are very important for them or they slowly trapped in the violence relationship and when they realized it; it’s too late for them to escape. The violence can cause so deep affect to the children. When infant exposed on the domestic violence it could affect infant’s development on many level. They can be scared to hear the loud argument and became moody because they didn’t feel safe and comfortable in the environment. For toddler and pre-school children, they may not understand the concept of violence the cause of expose on the domestic violence can led to misunderstand about the violence. They may think that may be common in all the families. For the older children like school age, the domestic violence can cause them be low self-esteem which may led to many emotion problem such as, aggressive behavior, rebellious, poor self-regulation. The effect on the physical part is also fearful. The infants are every weak and have higher chance die in the violence action to ward them, but overall children are the vulnerable Groups in the violent action. They can’t fight for their right and don’t know the ways to protect them self. The violence also one of the major fact cause development delete for young children. The stress and pressured under the violent action will cause their delete in cognitive development when they are afraid to explore the world around them or the bad modeling from family member.

What keeps women trapped in violent relationships is maybe because of fear. The fear that the violence may increase and be getting worst if they try to get out of the situation. In addition, it may be because of low-self esteem or the courage to step up to their abuser. They may feel many emotions that are keeping them from telling someone about domestic violence.
Infant and Toddler

Reflection

I believe when infants and toddlers are effected by domestic violence, they may experience fear and sadness often at a very young age. The infant and toddler may not know much about what is going on, but they do see, hear, and feel the presence of domestic violence. It may affect them in a way that can cause harm to them mentally, physically and emotionally that can also be atypical. The environment matters to the infant and toddler because of the tone of voice, the force, and the behavior that the individuals in the household are displaying. Since they are at a very young age they are very vulnerable to get hurt physically through the attitudes and behaviors the adults are displaying.

Preschoolers

Reflection

I believe preschoolers would be affected very much through the environment and the actions that the adults are doing. Young children are capable of learning from others and their peers, so by this they would see the behavior and may do the same at school or to their friends. These children may also be influenced to hit or harm their peers in any way and also say things that may be harsh from what they learned at home. The emotional effects would impact them by being upset most of the times, through frustrations, and anger. Socially, these children are affected by being afraid to talk to others, or may seem aggressive to others. Low – self-esteem at an early age may come as well since they may be afraid to say something if it will cause harm to them. Cognitively, these children may think that hitting and saying hurtful phrases may be okay for them since their parents are doing it at home.

The school age child may be affected through many ways in the many different developmental areas. These children may have seen domestic violence at the home and may not know what is right or wrong. It can affect them socially through fear and shyness towards their peers. Emotionally, these children may experience temper tantrums through shouting and hitting themselves maybe. Physically, these children may have been a part of the violence, at home. These children may also be affected by being mean and rude to other children since they experience this at home. Calling names or bullying others may occur as well socially and emotionally. Sadness may happen as well for the child because domestic violence may not always stop in the household, and it is never easy for them to experience or witness at home.

Hafsa Mahida

In my opinion I think a lot of women choose to stay in a abusive relationship with their partner because she may fear for her life and the life for her children because he might threaten her that he would kill her or her children. If the guy is good in front of others and hes a devil and starts acting like an animal then she will feel that no one will listen to her people will accuse her for giving wrong information about her partner. Also if she loves him a lot and he seems to regret violence she may want to try to make the relationship work and have the hopes of changing him. If the abuse has gone on for some time, a woman’s self-esteem erodes to the point that she feels she deserves the abuse.

She might feel she isn’t good enough for someone who treats her kindly, with love and respect. Or she might be brainwashed by her partner to believe she can’t cope without him. Some women feel the familiarity of abuse is better than the unknowns of life outside of the relationship. Things might be worse than they are with the abuser.
An abusive partner can go to great extremes to control and isolate his victim. He might take her cellphone or car keys to keep her isolated at home. He might cut her off financially or keep her on a very tight budget. Some abusers have prevented friends and family from contacting their partners or have even physically prevented a woman from leaving the house. They use fear and intimidation to prevent their partner from taking any action that might lead to exposure of the abuse or the end of the relationship. In some cultures. women stay because in an abusive relationship because they or the victims parents don't want to be ashamed or mocked at in front of society only because its an entertainment for the society to sit and watch.

I believe that a lot of women stay in abusive relationship with their partners out of fear. They fear what will happen to them and their children. The partner may be threatening to hurt the woman or even the children if she plans to leave him. And for this reason the woman feels that she is trapped in this abusive relationship because she's afraid of her partner hurting her or even worse her children. Also a lot of women stay in abusive relationship because most of the time the men are the ones that are the breadwinners, so financially she doesn't have the resources to leave. Someone women don't have the money, family or safe place to go.

All children are affected by domestic violence in many ways like physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. They can be physically affected by this because they may try to stop it and in the process get hurt. Socially and cognitively they see the way that their parents interact with each other allowing for them to think that it is normal to treat people this way. If they see this on a daily basis throughout their lives it becomes a model of what and how they should interact and treat each others. Emotionally they can blame themselves for what is happening, have trust issues in the further, and even suppress their emotions were express it in an aggressive way.

Why do women stay in abusive relationships? - Karishma G

As a woman, I believe that there are many factors which contribute to staying in an abusive relationship. Some factors include:
- A sense of financial stability: In some situations, women who are abused may depend on their partner/spouse for financial needs. They may not be employed and fear that if they leave they will not be able to provide for themselves financially.
- Low self-esteem: Women that are victims of low self-esteem tend to feel that if they leave, no one will want them or they may never find someone to love them the way their spouse/partner did. If the abuser "talked down" on the victim, their sense of self worth and esteem will be affected. Hence, they might feel it fit to remain in the situation and hope that it changes.
- A child is involved: Women that are mothers in abusive relationships, tend to stay because they want the best for their child. Some worry that the separation takes a toll on their child (ren). The women worry that the child might be caught in the middle of a custodial battle, and may fear losing the child in the process.

Domestic Violence affects children in a negative way whether they witness it happen or not. Children observe the way we interact with them, even if we might not notice it. A child might face neglect in terms of physical, emotional and cognitive levels. In terms of emotional, I believe that this is the biggest impact on a child. Reason for this being said is because the parent may, take out their frustration of the situation on the child. They may fail to offer a nurturing and caring attitude towards the child. Hence, the child becomes emotionally detached to the parent. Children may also feel that it is their fault the parents are in the situation. This is where the need to please both parents may come into play. The child is going to want the abuse to end, which is why they feel if they behave it will stop.

Overall, the affect of domestic violence, not only affects the victims but also the children witnessing it.

I believe that there are multiple factors to consider when discussing why Women become trapped in abusive and violent relationships. For example:

Love: Women are under the impression that they are in love with this person. The only reason they stay is to keep themselves or their partner happy.

Family/Child(ren): Women stay to keep the family together, they could be under the impression that this will benefit the child and the family in the long run.

Religion and Culture: due to the women’s religion and culture they may not approve of leaving their partners

Threats: Women stay because their partner threaten them with abuse or consequences that are worse than what they have already endured throughout their relationship.

Money/Finances: Women rely on their partner to make ends meet, in regards to paying bills, buying groceries, and much more. If they lose said partner, they will lose the ability to take care of themselves and the rest of the family (if applicable).

Lack of self-worth and self-esteem: These women lack the ability to trust themselves and to believe in themselves. They do not want to be left alone, they would rather endure the abuse then risk having no one to support the emotionally, and financially.

Questions: The women fear what they will be asked questions and be judged by their peers and family once they leave their partner. They may or may not support this change in their family.

The children’s holistic development would be affected from seeing violence within the home:

Infant/Toddler

Lacking in specific developmental domains

Lack appropriate affection and/or love from adults (social/emotional)

Experiences feelings that they do not understand, due to development (emotional)

Exposed to abuse, they can hear and see it but would not understand it (physical/cognitive)

Preschooler

May repeat behaviours and/or abuse that they’ve seen in the home, while at school (social, emotional, physical, cognitive)

These children may lash out against their peers (physical, social)

These children understand more of their feelings and would be able to show it more appropriately (emotional)

May think the misbehaviours are appropriate (cognitive)

School-Age

Self-esteem may begin to lower (emotional, cognitive)

May of been abused as well (physical, cognitive)

May also begin to lash out while at school (physical, social)

Shy away from peers and/or adults out of fear (emotional, social)

Regardless of the age of the child, abusive and violent relationships affect a child’s development holistically.

I believe women are trapped in violent relationships mainly because of fair. They fair for their lives, another reason is because they are dependent on their partners for support.

Children who experience domestic violence usually blame themselves, as they believe they are the cause for the fight.

Infant

The mother is the most important person in her baby’s life. And her baby needs the warmth of her touch, holding, and cuddling. When the baby senses what’s going on they pick up on the mother’s fair and tension. Just as she is sensitive to how her baby feels, her baby is sensitive to her. The infant might not eat or sleep on schedule, and may have stomachaches due to this tension. If the mother is constantly preoccupied, upset and unavailable, her baby will learn that she can’t count on her to be there to meet her needs. And, if she can’t trust her mother, she will then have trouble trusting others.

Toddler

A normally active toddler may become hyperactive, constantly testing us even to the point of enacting the violence by withdrawing, or shying fearfully away from people and acting like little victims. They are just learning to communicate with language and domestic violence in the home can affect their speech. Some of them have fears about going to sleep and have nightmares and tantrums. They may attach themselves to their mothers and other adults in ways that are not healthy. Some become overly clingy to their mothers and appear frightened of all other people.

Preschooler/School Age Children

Children at this age are more logical so they are actually capable of feeling that they are responsible for the violence in their family. They need and want to have explanations for what is happening in their world. It is hard for them to understand that bad and dangerous things happen for no apparent reason. This is a part of their normal self-centeredness. To deal with this overwhelming burden of responsibility, a little child may feel like a bad person and withdraw, or become very aggressive. Little boys who want to be like their fathers may have learned that it is all right to hurt other people when they are angry. They may bite, kick, hit or throw things, while little girls who copy their mothers may feel that being hurt is part of a loving relationship.

Why Do Women Stay in Abusive Relationship
Many women stay in abusive situations because of fear, religion, family values and financial support.
Many times I ask women why they stay in this unhealthy relationship, they would always say thing like, "He is not all that bad when he calm down he is a good father." I would say what is your definition of good. They would reply, "He pays the bills, and keep a roof over me and the children's head."
However, many women stay because of fear. Fear of threats from their partners, and fear of how they are going to cope without their partner, especially if children are involved. Religion play a big part in why women stay in abusive relationship. They are guided by what their believes are and they became trap in a continuous cycle of abuse. Also, family value plays a big influence is why women stay. For example, I have heard women say, "In our family, we stick it out to the end." As much as I was appalled by this statement, I had to grab some sense of understand why that statement was made. Moreover, from time, we know that men earn more money than women. Therefore, it is no surprise that women might stay in an abusive relationship because of financial stability. This is also common because sometimes even though the courts will award the woman custody and child support after a separation, it might not be enough to live and survive in today's society. Especially, if the woman was living a very comfortable life style. In a nut shell, most women do not think of the effect of living in an abusive relationship have on their children. From my personal experiences, I have seen a child hit is mom and when she ask him why he did that, "He said, dad does it you because you are stupid." I was shock!
However, as an ECE, I will experience a lot of different behaviours because the child is living in an abusive environment. It is my responsibility to best help that child and family, so that the child can live a production life. Also, the overall development of the child must be my first priority because I believe if the child's is developing with difficulties due to certain factors, it is my duty to find ways to better help that child.

I think women are trapped in abusive relationship because of financial support from their partner, faith or lack of awareness of abuse. In some countries and cultures, women are not allowed to work outside, and they need to stay at home to take care children or doing chore. Therefore, they are not independent in personal financial state, which means they need to ask money to support themselves and children. By this point, they have to listen and follow what their partners say or want with low self-esteem. Even their partners abuse them, women cannot speak out. Also, in some religions, women have not that much power as men. Therefore, domestic violence happens easily on those women. Furthermore, some women have lack of awareness of abuse, they might only understand physical abuse because of physical touching. However, they might do not know there are different kinds of abuse; such as emotional and neglect. Domestic violence affects children in negative ways because they are vulnerable.
Infant/toddler:

· loud noises associated with violence can be distressing

· Sleeplessness

· imitation in play may be related to witnessed aggression

Preschooler:

· learn about aggression in observed interactions

· Nightmares

· Increased aggression

· Generalized anxiety

It may result from the country or region's special environment, or religion. Women think it is not to be abused. They could be scared to speak out for themselves. Also, it could be low self- esteem of women. In some country or family, because of their traditional thoughts, they think man have higher status then women. Women need to listen to man all the time, whatever they do. Women do not have the right to change anything. Moreover, sometimes women are not independent enough. Someone get married and they think they can rely on their husband, they do not work anymore. When they get in trouble, they have no ability to fight against for themselves.

The affects on children:
1. Infants:
It may affect children's social and emotional development. They would be fear, anxious, sadness.
2. Toddlers:
Toddlers could imitate adults behaviour. They do not have the ability to assess the behaviour is right or wrong, they might do the same abusive behaviour to peers. Children who suffer form abuse, they would have delay in language, social skills, physical development.

3. Preschool/ School age:
Children may have lower self-esteem. Also, it would have impact on there behaviour, and temperament. They would have barriers in socialization, and communication. It may also have long- term affection, which would influence their adult life.

What keeps women trapped in violent relationship?
I believe the stereotype that man should be always over woman which keeps women trapped in violent relationships. The roles of women are identified as baby carers and house cleaners. In some countries, women don’t be allowed to go outside. Therefore, their uncertainty over finances and inability to manage situations happened in daily life may cause them suffering domestic violence. They believe that they have nowhere to go. In addition, victims are often blamed. Most of time, they also blame themselves and may feel guilt of shame. Furthermore, women who suffer domestic violence are afraid to leave her partner because they think their partner will hurt them, or even kill them. Children are mostly the main reason to trap women to stay in the domestic violence situation because they want to protect their children.

The impacts of domestic violence on children:

Infant and toddlers

Physical:

· Injuries

· lower health status

· more health conditions and problems

· behavior difficulties

· mental health

Social/ Emotional:

· excessive irritability

· sleep disturbances

· emotional distress

· low self-esteem

· low self-regulation

Cognitive: delay in normal brain development

Preschoolers

Physical: at the risk of abusing themselves

Social/ Emotional:

· limited social skills

· exhibit violent

· sleep problem

Cognitive: have difficulty in learning, delay in the development of their brains and cognitive growth

School Age Children:

Physical: at the risk of abusing themselves,

Social/ Emotional:

· limited social skills

· exhibit violent

· risky behavior such as bully others and threaten peers

· suffer depression and severe anxiety

· low self-esteem

· at the risk of abusing themselves

· lose the ability to feel empathy for others

· social isolated

· poor relationship with peers

Cognitive:

· low self-regulation

· have trouble with their school work

· poor concentration and focus

· lower reading abilities

Why do women stay in abusive relationship?

There are so many reasons why women stay in a abusive relationship
It is important to remember that each individual’s trauma

experience is uniquely their own. Below are some of the

contributing factors that prevent her from leaving. The list is not complete. There are many obstacles to leaving.

SURVIVAL: Fear about her own and her children’s safety if she leaves.

ECONOMIC DEPENDENCE: Can she survive on one income?

FEAR: Of being alone, fear that she cannot cope with home and children by herself.

PARENTING: Wanting a father for the children.

RELIGION: Pressure to keep the family together.

FAMILY: Extended family pressure to keep the family together.

RESCUE: If she stays, she can “save” him and help him “get better.”

FEAR OF HIS SUICIDE: He says he’ll kill himself if she leaves.

DENIAL: “It’s really not so bad.”

LOVE: She loves him, and he is quite often loving and lovable when he’s not being abusive.

IDENTITY: Many women feel that they need a man in order to be complete.

SHAME, EMBARRASSMENT AND HUMILIATION: She doesn’t want anyone to know.

LOW SELF-ESTEEM: After years of being criticized by her abuser, she believes that it must be her fault, she must deserve it, she’ll never find anyone better, “a little love is better than no love at all.”

One of the hallmarks of an abusive relationship is the way an abuser isolates and controls a victim, and the way the victim herself may be in denial. The trauma she experiences becomes her “normal”. Oftentimes the risks are too great to leave when your self-worth and power have been decimated. Domestic is as much and more psychological

abuse as it is physical abuse.

Sanjida Yeasmin
