in chapter 2 we learn that violet is running away from home. cause her parents hurt her and she wants to meet her sister chloe. then she goes to the train station to go to New York the tickets cost $3.92. she gets on the train and meets a lady named Mrs. Renwick she is dressed up as 20 years behind and smelt like mothballs. violet talked to Mrs. Renwick for the whole train ride Mrs. Renwick kept asking her how many kids she was going to have violet lied and said 7. then the candy guy asked violet if she wanted a piece of candy Mrs renwick said 2 Tootsie rolls for this sweet lady. it took a long time cause the train had to stop a few times.

Chapter 3: Meeting Myrtle

in chapter 3 violet is now in New York. when she gets off the train there are a lot of people in the train station. she doesn't know where to go so she asks a police officer. He says where is your mother? she says her sister is coming he says what about you wait here. She makes a fast move and runs upstairs.She gets out of there and then she starts walking a train then goes over on the EL she gets scared and then falls down.A girl named Myrtle helped her up Myrtle said do you want to get run over? Myrtle told violet that she was at a so-called school that helps you become a maid.then violet and Myrtle started walking then they smelt pickles and onions They headed over to a hot dog stand and got a hot dog for 5 cents.

in chapter 2 Violet and Myrtle make it to Washington Violet could see smoke rising from some trees she hadn't imagined Washington to look like this. they began walking Violet was glad Myrtle was from Washington Violet asked her where they were going Myrtle said they had to get washed up before they go anywhere they walk up hill Myrtle said this is were I used to live before. they take a shower then they go in another alley way this was neater They walked up to a lady's house they Myrtle banged on the door violet. didn't like the lady she didn't know if it was because she was colored or her nose or her grey hair she asked if her sister was their the lady said no.

in chapter 9 Mr. Martin violet Myrtle are on the train Mr Martin had gone looking for something to drink. violet had got some food for Myrtle.violet had to go to the back of the train cause only colored people could sit there. violet was looked at weird cause she was the only white person she got to Myrtles seat and gave her the food. violet said I think Mr Martin might be on the run from the police Myrtle already figerd it out as soon as they met. violet went back to her seat and two men stood at the other end they were all dressed in black. they asked if they knew a man violet acted dumb and no I don't know that guy

in chapter 11 Violet is in an elevator she has never been on one. There were men that came in the elevator they smelt like whisky Violet made it to the 9th floor and went to the room she had to be the room was so hot Violet wanted too take her clothes off but couldn't cause a lady was coming to get her clothes she left in the room. Violet went out in the hallway where it stank of whisky and the door was full of people that were drunk or tipsy. She went down to the dining room but the man there said and said evening wear is only in the dining room but Violet didn't have any evening wear.

chapter 12: Violet Spies

in chapter 12 Chloe and Violet are sleeping Violet wakes up and gets dressed quickly and heads down to go to the train station. But a young woman was walking around with a bowl of grape-nuts. violet figured the woman was Miss Lewis who Chloe had told her she had the other bedroom. she was about to go but Miss Lewis said you have to eat before you go Violet sat down and began eating Miss Lewis said Today's the fourth day the legislature. Violet headed out and was walking and saw two hobos and she thought of what hobo the hobie said that some hobos could be dangerous so she started walking the other way. but the shorter one pointed at her and then the taller one yelled out her name it was Mr. Martin and Myrtle.

Chapter: 13 Dead Horse Alley

Chapter 14: Bloomstens Pharmacy

In chapter 14 Myrtle is thinking about what's going to happen after the vote happens. Myrtle had been trying to keep Mr. Martin safe and out of sight. she is also telling him how he could get married to Chloe. she said they could move to china and have babies. Mr. Martin had to go out for an hour or so. Myrtle learns that Mr. Martin gets in trouble for speaking out against the war she is surprised that he got 20 years when she knows a guy that cut someone and they got only 3 years.

Mr. Martin and Myrtle

went to a pharmacy and sat down with Violet and Chloe. Mr. Martin and Chloe started arguing and making a scene Violet stepped outside and saw Myrtle sitting by a sign that said Underwood typewriters. Myrtle was jealous that Violet got to do all the spying Violet asked if she could go but Myrtle cut her off and said no cause shes embarrassed where she stays.

in chapter 16 Violet was eating a sandwich and drinking a chero-cola. They rode in the Hope Chest they went to a field where no one was there they didn't wear their roses. Violet didn't care because she was wearing a ugly plaid dress she was hoping to ruin it. Mr Martin sat underneath a tree reading new newspaper. Chloe taught Violet and Myrtle how to drive a car Violet was glad that she was getting to know how to drive a car.

Two men came in the door when Mr.Martin was putting tuna fish in his biscuit they had two guns Clinton at Mr. Martin head they put cuffs on Mr Martin and kept asking him questions they thought that he was Arpadfi' Mr. Martin for them that he was not Arpadfi' the officers thought that he was not an American citizen.

Chapter 17 The Hope Chest

In chapter 17 Myrtle ran into the door where Violet and Chloe were when she told them that Mr. Martin got arrested. Chloe went white and Chloe went with Myrtle. Violet watched them go down union Street.

Violet Turned on Hope Chest and stompped on pedal B and becone to drive and she didn't know how to go slow once she turned right a crowd of people was mad cause she was too young to drive.
