I would like to work in the early intervention setting. Early intervention is a very important factor in identifying early communication difficulties and targeting the problem areas sooner. I would like to work in the early intervention settings because it is so family oriented. Being able to educate the family on how to help their children with the speech and language difficulty identified is amazing to me. Family dynamics and the way children are raised is fascinating so being able to see them at home would be interesting to me.

Its obvious as to why I want to work with them since I speak Spanish, but more than anything I want to promote bilingualism. I mean c'mon, its awesome speaking two languages! I definitely see myself specializing in this area with a focus on autism because its definitely where my heart is at!

Since having my daughter, I am interested in learning anything and everything about pediatric feeding and swallowing: from breastfeeding/bottles to solid food. Because of my experience, I have really gained an interest in the promotion of breastmilk in the NICU and learning the role the SLP plays in the feeding and swallowing intervention of infants during their hospital stay. One of the things I also find exciting about the area of pediatric feeding/swallowing is parent education. Education has always been near and dear to my heart and I love that I get to follow my heart as an SLP while also being able to educate parents and colleagues. I know my heart is with infants, but I'm also very interested in helping adults with dysphagia. Time will tell, but I think I would LOVE to specialize in pediatric feeding/swallowing!

I find the brain so fascinating and would love to discover cognitive therapies and see the progress that can be made. However, I think that will only last so long until I feel the need to work with kids again. I have always loved working with kids and I don't think I can go my whole life without working with them. I figure I will transition to a school setting once I have a family and would really benefit from those summer breaks! Overall, this week's lessons taught me that you can't really go wrong in our field-there are so many different options you can choose from and each one sounds just as incredible and rewarding!

I am currently on a rotation at a hospital where I am able to see a lot of time with infants and children in the NICU and PICU. I have fallen so in love with this setting because of the difference I see that the rehabilitation teams are making, and it would be great to be a part of that! Most of the time these are not healthy children, however we are making a difference in helping them to gain functions that will help them gain normalcy as well as a better well being. These babies and children are so precious and it is a great feeling to know that we have made a difference in their day, as well as their lives. I also love the work setting in this environment because you usually have a team of other therapists working along side you and feeding off of each other, which creates a great support system!

My current rotation is at a skilled nursing facility where I see geriatric patients with cognitive/swallowing deficits. So far, it's a really good fit for me! I love this setting because therapy focuses on functional rehabilitation so that the clients can regain their independence. One of the most rewarding aspects of this setting is seeing the client's progress daily! In addition, collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of OTs, PTs and nurses is critical to the patient's success, and I have enjoyed working alongside them. I am also interested in the acute care setting, and look forward to gaining experience in other areas of our field :)

I love the kids, but It isn't my dream job. :) The SLP that supervises me maintains great relationships with the teachers, psychologist, and counselor to provide the best environment for her kids as possible. The Elementary school that I'm currently at has a classroom that they call the 'Brain Room' for kids that have behavioral issues. I think the program is spectacular because the kids are still exposed to regular gen-ed classrooms throughout the day. The school also calls each child their "friend" instead of client or student. I believe this has a positive effect when developing their little brains.

As of right now I like working with school-aged children. I love my school and the involvement from the surrounding communities. I am unsure at this time if I will want to stay in the schools until after I experience other settings. I am looking forward to working with the geriatric population. I guess overall I want to work in all settings until I find one that I absolutely love. The experience so far in the schools has been challenging and rewarding at the same time. I am excited to learn more from my current supervisor.

-Shelby Blossom

I did not think I would have enjoyed working with adults due to the general heart break of it. I absolutely love it though!! I am working in a rehab facility, but we make trips to icu, x-ray, and er. I have a various amounts of different kind of patients. Yes there is heart break but because of how rewarding it is, this makes up for the heart break! I enjoy hearing stories from my patients! Sometimes that may be all they can remember but it makes them happy to tell it. I love where I work and my boss, I am learning so much!! Now I have no idea if I want to work with adults or children hopefully both!!
Hali Harp

I would love to work with adults when I graduate. My first internship is a private practice clinic where I work with all kinds of clients (mostly children). I should have the opportunity to start working with adults at this clinic. Ultimately, I would love to work in a hospital setting that has all kinds of different cases and a fast paced environment. I look forward to the opportunity to work with adults.

I absolutely love it! My heart has always been set on working with children; however, after having this time and experience I am reconsidering my future job setting. I have worked with stroke, TBI, spinal injuries, etc. The list is endless! I enjoy the fast pace and the interaction with colleagues, it is sincerely a team collaboration with each patient. What I am really interested in is being "float therapist." Float therapists at my internship pick up shifts that need to be covered at different hospital daily. Their work setting is absolutely different every day! I am so intrigued and I am absolutely happy with my current experience.

Clinic Setting

Although right now I am not 100% what I would like to do, I am leaning towards the clinic setting. I have been getting feedback from other SLPs before me and have heard what they have liked and what they didn't like at different settings, and the clinic setting seems to be the most liked. I believe this is because you are not limited to the type of client you can work with. You will always be seeing different things and will not feel bored with your job. On the other hand, I could see myself wanting to be a school SLP if it wasn't for the pay and the sometimes overloaded caseloads. I am keeping an open mind throughout my internships.

NICU/Hospital

I have always wanted to work in the NICU. It has been the most interesting to me since day one. Currently, I have only been able to work with school aged children. My first rotation is in an elementary school so I have not had much experience with other populations. When I observed in a nursing home during undergrad I did enjoy it, but I think a hospital setting would be more of the setting I would like to work in. I like the variation of the hospital schedule and the idea of not having to do articulation drilling every day. I am excited to learn more about the NICU, hospital, and SNF settings so I can decide for sure what I would like to do for as a career.

I am not completely sure on what I want to do. I really love the school setting right now. The children are just so much fun and always a joy to be around. I love being able to see progress so quickly, and sometimes even after just one therapy session. However, I am keeping an open mind when going into my two adult rotations.
