Maddie is implying her illness here.  She is implying that because of all the excitement, she is breathing faster and faster, to the point where she is exaggerating that her like will “explode.”  The idiom suggests that her life will not literally explode, but is saying something that doesn’t exactly mean that.  She means she is very excited
