Puritans were a religious group of the 16th and 17th centuries who wanted to purify the church of England. They believed things in many strict ways such as sinning and religious beliefs. The Puritans wanted a city upon a hill in which God could be found in scripture and strong ethic. In England, they wanted to get rid of the Catholic church but they were put under persecution by the king. They then left and went to North America where all the witch trials and witch craft had began.

Start Of Witchcraft

Betty Parris became ill with strange behavior which then led to other playmates feeling the same way. They would be complaining of a biting and scratching feeling but no one was there doing that to them. They all suspected that the devil was real and thought he was the one doing this and hurting them. Tituba was also teaching young girls black magic and witchcraft. Some say the teens were doing this out of boredom which led them to be so fascinated in black magic. They had no TV or music and all they did was read the bible.

Witch Trials

Doctors were called to examine the girls strange behaviors and were suspicious it was tied to witchcraft. Witches also target children more which made the doctors suspicion even more likely. The way the girls were acting with their strange behavior led to the towns obsession because they believed in the devil and Satan working with the devil. Many women and men were accused of being witches and were hung. By the end of 1692 over 200 people were jailed and accused of witchcraft.

Testing For Witches

There were many different ways in which people tested to know if someone was a witch or not. One of the ways was they would strip them naked to see if there was a third nipple on their body. This was called the witches teat and it was extra nipple was used by witches to nurse demonic familiars. They also used the swimming test where they would throw the so called witch into water. This test was to see who sank or drowned because witches cannot swim.

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller was an American playwright and essayist who was married to Marilyn Monroe. Arthur displays Americas past in order to make a modern point. Miller traveled to Salem, Massachusetts to better research the witch trials of 1692. Arthur's best work was the Crucible which was a play on the Salem witch trials. When it was first released, it was not very successful but now it is his most read product.
