This project could explore the following: Globalisation, Ireland's shift into modernity, multiculturalism, global business, the expanding IT world, behind the scenes of Google, Facebook and Twitter.

Why is Dublin the European, African and Middle East Headquarter of so many international IT companies? What effect does this have on the local population? 

What are the benefits for these companies in Ireland? 
What benefits does Ireland have? Who works for these companies? 

What skills do young people need to have to work for these companies? 
What do they offer employees? What reasons do the companies give for setting up in Ireland? 
What do you think are the real reasons? 
How many people do company’s employ? 
Is any of the work outsourced? Where is labour outsourced to?

Survey the workers and local people at the Docklands. Find out what companies are there and what they do. Ask local people what they think of the new huge buildings and infrastructure around them.

 

The Silicon Docks area is built  around an old part of the  inner city of Dublin. Try and take photos that contrast the old Dublin with the new. Look out for “Young Urban Professionals” or Yuppies. 

The Docklands are an area a ten-minute- walk awaz from Trinity College. There you can find the international headquarters of the world’s biggest Internet companies. 

Consider how the new learning from the investigation can be taken into the classroom later.  

Areas for consideration could include: 

New technology (vocabulary); discover new Internet-based verbs and verbs with new meanings:
to google, to tweet, to post, 
to follow, to like, to unfriend etc.

 

Present a lesson on Globalisation, using the silicon companies as an example for Globalisation in business.

Inquiry-based project:
How can you use your knowledge about the Book of Kells now to create a lesson or a part of a lesson at your school?

1. Make a quick exploration of the museum. 
2. Choose your favorite item or painting and take a photo of it (no flash!).
3. Follow the scaffolding provided by fhe file "Reading a Painting" and describe your item or painting with the help of the template.

Tasks AFTER the visit:

4.2 Name of the artist, title of the work of art and year.
5.2 Group's description of the work of art.
