The first stage in Erikson's theory of psychosocial development begins at birth and continues to about 18 months of age. During this stage, the person is unsure about the world in which they live, and looks to their parents for stability and consistency of care. If stability is found and the child chooses trust they build hope, if not they build fear. A personal expiernece with this would be when I was a child I was supported by my parents and built trust and hope from a young age.

The second stage of Erikson's timeline would be Autonomy vs. shame and doubt. This stage happens at the ages of 18 months to approximately 3 years. According to Erikson, children at this stage are focused on building a sense of personal control over physical skills and a sense of independence. If people in this stage are encouraged and supported in their independence, they become more confident in their own ability to survive in the world. If children are overly controlled, or not given the opportunity to find independence, they begin to feel inadequate in their ability to be independent, and may then become overly dependent on others. A personal expiernece of this stage in the timeline would be when I was younger and learned to become independent I enjoyed adventuring and getting lost and learning by exploring.

The third stage of Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development is initiative versus guilt. During the initiative versus guilt stage, people assert themselves more often through directing play and other social interaction. Children begin to plan things, make-up games, and initiate activities with others more often. If given the opportunity, children develop a sense of initiative and feel secure in their ability to lead others and make decisions. A personal expiernece I have with this could be when I was younger and in school and interacting with other students. I remember playing and making up games with my peers.

Erikson's fourth psychosocial stage is involving industry vs. inferiority, occurring during childhood between the ages of five and twelve. People in this stage are at the point where they will be learning to read and write, to do sums, to do things on their own. Teachers and peers begin to take an important role in the child’s life as they teach and influence the child specific skills and social abilities. A personal experience of this stage for me would be when I was between 5 and 12 and going into school, relying on my teachers to show me important skills.

Stage five of Erikson's theory of psychosocial development is identity vs. role confusion, it occurs from about 12-18 years. During this stage, kids search for a sense of self and identity, through an exploration of personal values, beliefs, and goals. This is an important stage of development where the child has to learn the roles they will occupy as an adult. During this stage the adolescent will re-examine his identity and try to find out exactly who he or she is. A personal experience with this stage would be just accouple years ago I really started figuring out what I wanted to do with my life and how I want to live.

Intimacy vs. isolation is the sixth stage of Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. This stage happens during young adulthood between the ages of approximately 18 to 40 yrs. During this stage, the major conflict centers on forming intimate, loving relationships with other people. A personal experience with this stage is that I just turned 18 and am living through it and searching for intimacy for life.

Generativity vs. stagnation is the seventh stage of Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. This stage takes place during middle adulthood ages 40 to 65 yrs. By not finding a way to contribute, we become stagnant and unproductive. These people feel disconnected or uninvolved with their community and with society as a whole. Success in this stage will lead to the virtue of care. A personal experience with this stage, even though I am not in the age range yet, I believe by going into teaching and being an empathetic person I have prepared and looked forward into the Generativity vs. Stagnation stage of development.

The eighth stage of the development process is ego integrity vs. despair. This stage begins at approximately age 65 and ends at death. During this time that we look back at our accomplishments and can build integrity if we see ourselves as living a successful life. A personal experience in this stage for me, even though I am not that old yet, I hopefully will be old and living a retired life with family and friends, looking back at all the hard work and choices made throughout my life.
