Frogs begin their lives as an egg. An adult frog lays hundreds of eggs in a round cluster that is collectively known as frogspawn. Layings happen in early spring and are commonly seen in shallow, still waters.

After 1-3 weeks in the egg yolk, baby frogs, called tadpoles, hatch. These animals are distinct because of their gills, mouth, and long tail. Tadpoles will spend the first few weeks getting nutrients from the yolk they were in and then eventually explore the water around them. They feed on plant material.

Over 14 weeks, tadpoles will metamorphose into frogs. During these 14 weeks, tadpoles will begin to grow front and back legs and start eating insects rather than plant material. The tail they had will shrink and their gills become covered by skin. Tadpoles will grow lungs and eardrums that are vital for them to survive on land. Once gills and tails are gone, their metamorphosis finishes in 24 hours.

After their last metamorphosis, tadpoles are officially considered frogs. Frogs do not need to live in water to survive, but hydration and shade will be important for them to not dry out. Frogs will still take an occasional splash in ponds or lakes. When the female frogs start to consider where to lay eggs, the frog life cycle starts over again.
