Cancel Culture, more harmful than good. by Giavanna Voories

Cancel culture was created by the Internet, typically social media such as Twitter and Youtube. Cancel culture typically attacks celebrities and content creators who have done something scandalous or harmful. While these things being attacked and brought to light is a good thing, it also typically brings up the wrong crowd of people. Cancel culture causes more arguments and discourse around something that could have been a one-and-done thing. The person could have been de-platformed or criticized, without all of the arguments.

I chose this as a good example of cancel culture, and how it inevitably leads nowhere. BetterHelp is an online therapy company made to give therapy to people online for a lower cost. But, recently there has been an outrage because people are paying for therapy while getting terrible therapy service. Despite all of the outrage, though, the company still gets customers and good reviews despite the harmful things they are doing. This is a good example of cancel culture, as there was such a huge outrage, but it didn't lead anywhere.

Cancel culture, in separate terms, is just taking accountability for your actions. If someone gets called out for antisemitism (example, Kanye West), you shouldn't ignore that. You should take accountability for it, and grow from it, and be a better person. Take accountability for your actions, don't ignore the problem.

While cancel culture rightfully de-platforms people who deserve it, it can cause a cycle of doom scrolling and can cause quite a large amount of stress in the average person. While it is always good to know what's going on and keep yourself informed, it's also good to give yourself breaks.

An example of cancel culture would be J.K. Rowling being rightfully called out for antisemitism, racism, and transphobia within her series Harry Potter. She has spewed terf (transphobic) rhetoric and refuses to apologize or take accountability for her actions. She actually, despite all of this, continued to push her beliefs, which have caused immense harm towards transgender people, especially in recent times.
