Lord Henry examines Dorian Gray´s portrait with Basil, it seems that they look beyond the portrait and find so much more about Dorian.
Henry makes Dorian realize his beauty, Dorian wishes the painting would age instead of him.

Three important concepts of the novel are found in this chapter. First, Henry makes Dorian aware of his own beauty for the first time, and he thought that by aging, Dorian will loose his beauty. Second, the meeting between these two was unhealthy. Dorian may be beautiful, but Henry is witty and insightful. This influence will extend into the very depths of Dorian's soul, as seen when Henry persuades Dorian to put Sibyl's death behind him.

Henry becomes aware of Dorian watching him and wants to "fascinate" Dorian. This shows Dorian's power in general and the novel's homoerotic tendencies more specifically. This makes me imagine a deep introvert relationship between these two men. For me, its pretty obvious that Henry has intense emotions and feelings for Dorian, but Dorian is very arrogant to pay attention to them.

The author of the book never explicit explains what does Lady Henry (Lord Henry´s wife) feels when Dorian is around. It seems to be nervous every time he is around her. Also, since she comments on her husband's 17 pictures of Dorian, at least part of it seems to be jealousy. This jealousy is pretty clear form where it comes from, due that Lord Henry and his wife do not make a good match. When Dorian says "wold desire to know everything about life" fulfill me, it makes me feel that although there are negative situations in life, I am motivated to continue exploring and feeling everything that life has to offer me. This chapter powerfully develops Wilde's themes of the conflict between appearance and reality and between art and life.

In this chapter for first time, the author shifts his focus away from Dorian, Henry and Basil. He now focuses on another group of three: Sibyl, her mother, and her brother. Sibyl has been influenced during childhood by her mother's theatrical sense of what life ought to be like, although it rarely lives up to her expectations.

Henry and Basil do not know what to think about Dorian´s engagement. Henry makes a philosophical argument, saying, "Believe me, no civilized man ever regrets a pleasure, and no uncivilized man ever knows what a pleasure is." For me, what Henry wants to tell Dorian is that he wants him to keep up with her love life although is not what he wants. To me, this thought is everything but selfish from Henry to Dorian. In real life, what we must do is something kind of what Henry does. Let the one you love, live with what they love.

A theory is very realistic from this chapter; "art is a kind of escape from reality. "People create art to escape their surroundings and create a better world." That's what Sibyl was doing with her acting until she met Dorian. For me, this statement means so much, I do think that art is the abstract face of reality, the face that gives meaning to everything.

Dorian speaks with both Basil and Henry. This time he sees only Henry, who starts by being supportive and sympathetic. Henry soon guides Dorian to see Sibyl's death aesthetically, as he does. This is, in many ways, horrific. Dorian, though, accepts the guidance, and fully embraces Henry's life path of pleasure.

In this chapter, Dorian shows himself to be someone who can refuse to see the meaning and ugliness in an ugly thing (Sibyl's death). Basil is rightly horrified at Dorian's response, which is cold and distant to the point of being inhuman. How can a human do not respond to a tragedy as a human would do it? Dorian keeps many feelings inside and left others to wonder what is going on inside his head.

Dorian has shown himself completely unwilling to learn from experience. The fact that Dorian keeps locked the room where he has the painting and childhood memories, makes sense to readers that they do not know nothing about the past of Dorian. Dorian's decision to hide the painting supports two of the novel's themes: appearance versus reality and art versus life.

The portrait gets more and more ugly, this could be because Dorian is not the same as it used to be at the beginning, he is influenced by the personality of Lord Henry, maybe someone could think that Dorian could be better due Lord Henry somehow is helping him, but in reality, is all the way around.

Basil leaves the country. Dorian and Basil move through a foggy reality, they think that their lives are controlled, but they are in constant movement, they're not clear as they think they are.

This chapter marks a transition in Dorian´s development. Here happens a huge change, now, Dorian lets everyone see the painting. The painting revealed makes everyone get shocked. It was horrific, it did not was like Basil imagined in his "reality". Sometimes our expectations and desires for something or someone makes us see things and make us feel something that is not the real essence of that thing or person. Dorian does not want to face the real nature, and due to Basil´s bad reaction to the painting, Dorian kills Basil. What a shame! A great example of neglecting the truth and being egocentric, taken to a point that one person kills another...

This is one of the chapters that homosexual activity is implied. It is pretty obvious that the author of the novel does not want to project the exact situations that happened between these two men.

The actions taken by Dorian to Basil left him non-sense at first, everyone could think that he has not emotions or conscious. But then, he cannot eat with the facility and gets rapidly upset. The discussion between Lady Narborough and Henry offers a good example of how people see Dorian and the dramatic irony between his appearance and reality. Because he is so beautiful, people associate him with being in love. They assume that everything coming from Dorian is about romance, but in fact, his way of coming from killing someone.

James Vane, after letting some time pass, suddenly decides to confront the one that ruined his sister. Such things like this one do not matter if they are taken action after the situation happened or years later. Making an important decision such as this one implements meditating the problem and put in the table the pros and cos of re-action to that action. Even if James is now a drunk addict.
