The Sarong Kebaya is a traditional outfit worn mainly by the female Peranakans also known as Nyonyas ( 娘惹）. It consists of the Kebaya and the Sarong. The Kebaya is a long sleeved blouse made out of thin fabric, and embroidered with floral or very complicated designs. The sarong is a long skirt with batik that is like a form of art in the Peranakan culture. The meaning of the word Peranakan refers to a cultural group formed through the intermarriage of Chinese immigrants and indigenous populations in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Malay Archipelago. ( fun fact! Peranakans are also known as 'Straits Chinese' ) The female Peranakans wear the sarong kebaya. The Sarong Kebaya originated in the Malay Archipelago and was later influenced by the Peranakan community in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

Evolving to a Malay traditional dress (like the Baju Kurung and Baju Kebaya) and was influenced by Chinese embroidery and European colonial fashion. The outfit was a strong symbol of femininity and tradition.

Girls were often taught by their mothers and grandmothers to sew or embroider kebayas making it a part of family heritage, and wearing the kebaya was a way they showed pride in their Peranakan roots.

Moreover, Chinese calligraphy remains an important part of modern Chinese life, be it in academic settings, on festive banners, or as a hobby, the art of calligraphy remains a link between past and present, a living tradition that connects us to our roots.
