Even if, during his lifetime, he was never recognized as the artist that he really was, especially for his probabily mental illness, that led him to death in 1890.
He was the author of 900 paintings and more than 1000 drawings.
He laid the foundations of Expressionism. He was a misunderstood genius, because his art was the result of his need to express himself. His works focused on the interior part of the characters.

His techniques were differents:
  • He exalted shapes with dark and wavy outlines.
  • His backgrounds were full of light colours to bring out the dark subjects.
  • Dotted with short strokes.
  • Squeezed the colour form the tube directly on canvas.

Among his most important and famous masterpieces there're:
- “Potato Eaters” (1885)
- “Self - Portrait: Series” (1886)
- “Portrait of Père Tanguy” (1887)
- “The Yellow House” (1888)
- “Bedroom in Arles” (1888)
- “Still Life: Sunflowers series” (1888)
- “Starry Night” (1889)
- “Iris” (1889)
