I had encountered Quakerism through extended family when I was young, but I started to think about it more when I was working as a historical guide — I read the book Daughters of Light, about Quaker women traveling in ministry in the 1700s in North America. I found their quotes to be so alive, so present, as if they were written today—like I would be excited to be these women's friends. They were so bold in following their Inner Guides, even in the face of great challenges, and I liked that!

I loved Kathy's "ice cream" metaphor! She described different Quaker meetings as different flavors of ice cream—one meeting might be chocolate, and another is rocky road. Both are delicious, just a little different! You might have a favorite flavor, but still enjoy tasting other flavors sometimes.

For the first 4-5 years I attended Quaker meeting, I did not think of myself as a Quaker—it was more like Quakerism was a thing I *did*, rather than a thing I *was*. After I became a member a year ago and got more involved in my meeting, I kinda figured, well, if a Quaker is someone who does Quakerism, then I sure am doing a Quakerism over here, so I guess I am a Quaker!

But I still feel the same on some level, that it's more a thing I do rather than a fixed identity—a descriptive term, rather than a prescriptive term.
