While teaching human reproduction, I sited examples of sex determination is illegal in India due to increasing rate of feticides due to which male and female ratio is not balanced leading to distressing rate of various social crimes. The students were interested to know about other countries what is practice. We conducted a debate on topic ‘if sex determination should be legal or not’. Students came up with International laws on gender selection, new phenomenon called ‘reproductive tourism’ where people travel for gender selection and general infertility treatments such as IVF to the countries where gender selection is legal. The students who were against sex determination, stated that sex selection for non-medical reasons raises serious moral, legal, and social issues. Principal issues include, “the distortion of the natural sex ratio leading to a gender imbalance and because it can reinforce discriminatory and chauvinist stereotypes towards women by devaluing females. For this perspective the students who were standing for sex determination showed acceptance and were compassionate towards deciding what is right to mankind globally rather winning the debate. This exhibit personal concern for people all around the world, and this demonstrates in itself a sense of moral responsibility to other people, and a commitment to the values of a community. They are aware of the long-term consequences of human behavior on the environment and on global society. This lead to unknowingly highlight on international-mindedness.

We in the educational process aim to educate students toward an internationally-minded approach to life for that we need to develop a more sophisticated view of what is going on in schools to support the process. By exploring the various dimensions of topics, we can contribute toward promoting international-mindedness. It will highlight attitudes of students related to their sense of connection to, interest in, and responsibility for, the global community and the behaviors associated with this perspective, thus directing toward the affective change that might result from practices in the classroom and the broader school environment. Discussing on global problems, having a debate on some topics like global warming, Pollution, Population, waste- management, nuclear energy students collect information locally but around the world to discuss and reflect on the topic. Focus on global issues, not just those of one particular country or culture encourages students to understand that all cultures have equal validity and to practice tolerance and understanding, leading to a peaceful world.

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

In our school we conduct Science fair, where the students are asked to select a topic of their interest and we guide them to do research. They collect the literature from various journals, websites. Due to ever evolving technology, they are able to refer the contents at both national and international level, collaborate with each other, work for about 21 days and plan the experiments and execute it at school to analyse and interpret the results. Science fair provide students with prospects for continual inquiry into a range of local and global issues and thoughts. When they do experiments each one would share their experiences of what they do in their culture or what they have observed in their places they belong to. It’s interesting the way they share their sights, though they have differences but then accepting the sentiments of peer and taking the right decision for the community welfare or real-world problem. This helps them to appreciate different views, ideals and experiences, and across cultures and disciplines

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

At schools we organize group 4 projects where students from four branches of science such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics collaborate in doing the projects. Here I look at the attributes of IM incorporated. As students from different branches need to exchange their views, discuss, argue, and finally come to a consensus in getting the final output. The students need to be open minded in accepting the others point of view. They should be tolerant in understanding the views of peers. This is the platform where students acquire the qualities of IM unknowingly and prepare them as global citizen. To elaborate on the same, we conducted STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programme at our school which is an interdisciplinary and applied approach. STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications where the students collaborate share their perspective and work together though there will be differences they accept the same and come up with a solution to the problem

As one understands IM, they identify themselves as member of human community. Nation and culture, will not be a constraint in interacting with people around the world. Students of various religion and culture from different parts of India and other countries study together in a supportive environment. By exchanging their experiences, culture, traditions and knowing different languages will help the child to be compassionate, acclamatise and committed to serve the wellbeing of the global community and lead them to be a global citizen.

For me IM means open-mindedness, tolerance and responsibility towards other culture, tradition, principles. These attributes are essential for anyone to interact with the people on International platforms. From the beginning of the modern scientific advancements, many inventions and discoveries happened in collaboration with this attribute of IM are implicit. Open-mindedness to me is to accept people following different culture, traditions which helps me to be tolerant towards people’s ideas and helps me to work in an open environment accepting their views. I feel a person who is international minded also has the responsibility on their shoulder to protect and care for their own culture and multiplicity as well as accept others.
