Border Patrol Agents were able to see the tracks and find out just how badly they were being directed, and as the night turned into day they are getting closer to their flaming demise. There were a few of the people who made it until they got picked up, but they were too far gone while on their airlifts back. While Mendez deals with 16 years in prison Rita Vargas is at the funeral for the men that didn't come out of the disaster alive, and many of the people there saw the men as heroes of their communities and the U.S. being the enemies. Many of the people seeing these changes were infuriated by the people who think immigrants worsen the economic system. He tells us how he got a letter from Reymundo Sr.'s nephew telling the author that his story of what happened let his family know what really happened to them in the desert, and let them be at peace for the ones they lost.
