The Great Pacific Garbage patch is a marine debris issue in different areas of the north pacific ocean.What it means is that the ocean debris is constantly mixed by wind and ocean waves and then it goes in different directions thoroughout the north pacific ocean

Where does the trash come from?

80% of the trash comes from the land. for example people who litter or the trash can get caught in storm drains or travel through rivers and bays. 20% of the trash comes from the sea. one example is when containers are being shipped over seas...some areas have severe storms and can cause the ship to wreck or cause some of the containers to go over board. (approximatly 100 each year) some of these containers hold shoes or tons of plastic bags.

Well people on boats can throw trash over board

Waves can carry the trash

the plastic that's in the garbage patch doesn't decompose instead it just breaks into smaller and small pieces causing more trash which causes the trash to remain .

well as you see in the video on my first example there are five of these garbage patches in the ocean

The marine life is impacted by the garbage patch because plastic can wrap around their necks or the trrash can be ingested

On Land the garbage patch affects humans and their food sources because the garbage patch causes dangerous occurrences for the marine life and some of the marine life is our food source

Are there any efforts to cleanup the garbage patch

currently there are no cleanups because it is almost impossible to see where it starts and ends.

Charles moore (the one who discoverred this) plans to do a reasearch trip to see what he can do

Create biodegradable plastic so that way the plastic dissolves instead of becoming smaller.

Remove plastic completely.

Reduce the amount of littering

no..i had no idea that there was 5 major garbage patches in the worrld and i didnt know that the north pacific was the worst one

Most people dont know about it probably because eithe they dont pay attention or its not a big issue because there arent any solutions

How can people help spread information about this problem and/or help develop solutions?

people can try broadcasting it online or putn up flyers....they can come up with ways to limit creation of plastic and the amount of trash thats littered/dumped
