There was inquiry and paraphrasing. I think there was genuine positive regard and spaciousness for response and questions from the mentor. It made me recognize how pauses are a helpful way to listen intentionally.

Mentor did a lovely job of paraphrasing without making it seem like they were paraphrasing, and moving the conversation forward with nudges to glance at challenges from different perspectives. Both speaker & mentor were asset-based in their approach, identifying challenges and immediately generating ideas with how to address those challenges and new things to try. Kept things light and comfortable, and felt like a safe space to share!

My mentee was very skilled in self-reflection and critical thinking. This makes the mentor's job easier because they provide their own stems! It also challenges the mentor to take the speaker to the next step or inquire about things they have not considered.

It helped writing notes as I went to identify the big picture/themes. It also helped foster a question I could ask to further thinking and next steps. It also helped to model what Julie did, paraphrase and then ask an inquiry question. Asking open ended questions gave me a lot of information to work with.

The conversation moved along with the open ended questions.

Paraphrasing helped guide to the next question. It stalled when I wasn't sure what else to ask. At one point, I wished I had the stem questions to ask, but didn't want to pull them up in the middle of the conversation.

I stalled out at the beginning of the conversation because I was hyper focused paraphrasing. I couldn't recall any questions to ask from what I was saying. I ended up just stating that I was going to use the anchor chart. After that, it started to roll more naturally. It made me feel awkward to say, "I need this chart" but I think I'm just going to own that my first year of mentoring.

The mentor asked all the right questions! I ended up with some real goals to take back !

The T chart of the paraphrase sentence stems was super helpful. Also, Julie's tips to just write words to help you stay focused and paraphrase was key. I stalled when I had an idea to help and wanted to jump into the consultant role when I was challenging myself to stay in the coaching role.

What helped me as the 'mentor' was starting by validating what I'd heard them say through paraphrasing, then flowing right into an open-ended question that related to that concern they had articulated; something like: "What are some ways you've thought about how you might approach that?"

The speaker and mentor both demonstrated genuine curiosity and empathy both for each other, the situation they were discussing and also for themselves. It seemed like a natural conversation. I can't remember the specific stems but that is because they didn't stand out or seem scripted.

The mentor paraphrased really well. At one point, she stopped paraphrasing and started to ask a question. She stopped herself, went back, and gave her mentee time to process/ respond to the paraphrasing. I think this was a great example of correcting in the moment. The mentee didn't mind and she modeled giving herself grace.

Having the structure of asking a broad question, paraphrasing what is heard, inquiring, and asking about next steps, was really helpful! The use of stems also was effective. Due to all this, I felt confident and could focus on the Speaker, rather than myself.

My mentor did a great job of reflecting back a key idea from what I'd been talking about before chiming in with a question. When I'm mentoring, I find myself being reluctant to do that, so it was helpful to experience some of the benefits of it firsthand and reflect on why it's helpful.

The only thing that really got in the way for me was being conscious of the relatively tight timeline, and trying to pick an area of focus that was about the right size for a 7-minute conversation.

Great job asking questions to keep the convo moving forward. Paraphrased and then asked an inquiry question. Good non-verbals that showed they were interested, related, validating, and tracking. Pointed out a strength in the convo. Questions got narrowing and more specific as the convo went on.

The open ended question support my thinking. Hearing a paraphrase and pausing before asking another question allowed me share further thinking instead of changing the topic. A slower pace feels better.
