"She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness, that the only victory lay in the far future, long after you were dead, that from the moment declaring war on the Party it was better to think of yourself as a corpse." (Book 2; Chapter 3)  

In this quote Winston realizes that the success of overturning the Party would come at high cost and the most important thing Winston reveals is that this overturn would not come anytime in the near future. Winston addresses that this long life war would never be won in their lifetime. The last couple of words integrated into the quote speak to the reader foreshadowing the future.

The author creates a hopeless tone to foreshadow what was happening during this time period with the Party. He starts off by saying that during this time they were so hopeless that there was no such thing as happiness in their life. Winston also mentions that the only victory that will ever be occuring in a far future long after he and everyone during this time period is dead portraying a hopeless person. Mentioning that it's best you do not declare war on the Party for your own sake or you will find yourself dead. So basically, he says that you rather lose all hope because there would be no change happening to your life.

The opposite words "victory" and "dead" used in the sentence create suspense as to what is going to happen. This oxymoron makes us doublethink about the cost of victory opposed to death.

The target is to those who intend to rebel against the Party. Warning them of the consequences that would happen if they do decide to rebel. 

“It’s the one thing they can't do. They can make you say anything―anything―but they can't make you believe it. They can’t get inside you.

THE VEIL
The subject of this quote is that the party only has so much power to a point where they are able to control anything you say however they are unable to make you believe that what was implied to say is true. 

Winston creates an objective tone implied in this quotes paraphrasing. He tells us that there is one thing that is not in the hands of the party. The party is enabled to make you say “anything” but even then they are unable to make you believe it. There's no way they will ever know that you are going against them by not believing what they said and told you to say. Basically, he tells us that people can not be influenced by what they are told to say.

TOOLS OF SATIRE: Irony 

It is ironic to see how the Party is able to make you say anything but they're not able to make you believe it.

The target is to those who do not believe what the Party is making them believe but can't control what the Party is making them say . It is for those who fully understand where they stand and what they believe but because of fear are unable to speak up.

The Veil: The subject of this quote is to show that although they were completely controlled by the Government, they were still human and felt emotions to certain events that occured. This quote is important because although they seem as their are not in control of their life they are still incontrol of their emotions which is the little ounce of them feeling human.

The Tone: The tone for this passage would be empathetic because although he doesn’t physically feel her pain, he does feel sorry for her and his natural human instinct is to help her up. With this part of the quote, “In front of him was an enemy who was trying to kill him; in front of him, also, was a human creature, in pain” in spite of the fact that they are supposed to have anger and hate for each other, he is compassionate and shows empathy towards her.  

In this passage we see Irony being the main tool of satire because if you see your enemy hurt or injured, it isn’t expected that you feel bad for them or would want to help them up. In Winston’s case although she is his enemy, he wants to help her up because he feels something for her and doesn’t see her as the enemy. 

Target: For this passage the target is towards the party, from knowing that Winston has these thoughts we can infer that maybe he will be one to rebel against the Government or the party itself.

The Veil: The subject of this quote is to express that Winston was ecstatic to find out that Julia isn’t a virgin disregarding the fact that she is in the anti-sex club. The fact that she has been with a lot of men excites Winston because this means that the party has problems within itself and members will most likely continue to rebel against it. 

The Tone: In this passage the tone seems to be mutinying the reason behind it is because when Julia takes off her sash she is essentially disobeying the Government and whatever she has pledged to. Both Julia and Winston are acting in a rebellious manner because the sneak off to meet each other and the are risking the fact that if they get caught there will be terrible consequences. 

 Pessimism is the main tool used in this passage because Julia had given the note that read “I love you” and his first thoughts were that she was part of the Thought Police or that the note contained an order for him to commit suicide. Individuals in the community aren’t able to be happy because they always think twice about the situation and assume the worst.

Target: The target is towards personal relationships in the book, they choose not to be completely in love because not only do they question themselves, they question their significant other and if they are being truthful.
