Sensory activities help children learn to manipulate objects while also promoting language development and problem-solving skills. Sensory-rich play is inclusive to all children, as there is not one correct way for children to participate. Cognitive development is supported through hands-on engagement with interactive materials.

Social-emotional regulation is a vital component of integrated curriculum. Ensuring that students are given the tools they need to experience healthy emotional growth is also a crucial part of their cognitive development. Each of their needs are closely related, and social-emotional development positively influences all other aspects of a child's progression. When all of these needs are met, students can flourish to reach their full potential in the classroom. This is why social-emotional standards are now an important part of integrated curriculum, as teachers must not neglect certain needs by only focusing on academic progress.

Dramatic play is a crucial component of developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood education. This type of play allows children to participate in complex interactions that promote language acquisition and discovery-based learning. When children partake in dramatic play, they act out various roles and take on the responsibility of such roles. Participating in role-based play requires children to use language in a variety of forms in order to express their roles and interact with their peers. This type of interaction supports their social development and language comprehension, while also allowing them the freedom necessary to begin defining their own identities. Children may choose to act out roles where they have to care for others, such as pretending to be a parent or a doctor. These types of care-taking roles give children practice enacting empathy and compassion.

Family factors also play a role in a teacher’s ability to teach students. Principals and teachers agree that what is going on at home will impact a student’s tendency to learn. Divorce, single parents, poverty, violence, and many other issues are all challenges a student brings to school every day. While some teachers and administrators try to work with children in less than ideal family environments, they can only do so much, especially when parents are often not willing to partner with the schools to provide for the children.

Encouraging Family Involvement

Families are far more likely to want to become involved in their child's learning when teachers reach out to them and express a genuine interest and concern. Teachers must also show respect towards the beliefs, values, and culture of students and their families to ensure that they feel safe in expressing their identities. There are a variety of ways teachers can encourage family involvement, such as inviting students' families in to be classroom volunteers, attend informative sessions about their child's learning, or even doing a show-and-tell event. Families should have choices about the ways in which they would like to become involved in the classroom, and teachers should also provide options for families who want to help their students from home rather than coming into the school.
Often teachers find there is no happy medium when it comes to the parent's involvement, according to the Kids Health Guide. Some parents won’t be seen for the entire school year, no matter what sort of issues might occur. Others never seem to go away, hovering over the child and teacher and interfering with the education process. There are ways parents can become involved and support their child’s education at the same time, but teachers don’t always get that level from parents.
