Worsley, driven by a strong sense of purpose, first joins a 2008 expedition that follows Shackleton's footsteps, but his most ambitious project arrives in 2015: a solo, unsupported voyage across Antarctica. Grann reconstructs the trip using Worsley's diaries and recordings, resulting in a realistic depiction of both the harsh Antarctic terrain and the explorer's inner life. As Worsley pushes through exhaustion and agony, the journey morphs into a sobering reflection on bravery, obsession, and the cost of legacy. He regrettably dies just short of attaining his goal.

this story used to reflect human endurance, the dangers of hero-worship, and the emotional toll of extreme ambition. [Annotation: The owl theme represents the rebirth of a sad legend.] As the youths are enticed into reenacting the myth, tensions arise over class, culture, and identity, mirroring the divisions in the ancient tale. [Annotation: The protagonists' personal difficulties reflect wider societal and historical issues, particularly those between English and Welsh ancestry.] The novel investigates whether they can break the cycle of myth or are stuck by it, exploring themes of fate, heredity, and the power of storytelling. Garner says that myths shape—and may even control—our present unless we address them consciously.
