I enjoyed listening to your voiceover of your concept map. This is an important concept and one that has multiple layers and variables. I appreciate the subtopics that you have identified. I particularly appreciate your stream titled "Trust" under the Cultural Capital subtopic. While listening to your voiceover, I noticed multiple times that you alluded to situations or examples that were directly tied to relationships and trust. Trust enables better collaboration and collaboration leads to a stronger sense of unity and community. Collaboration is one of the subtopics for my research. I look forward to learning more about your topic as we progress through the course.

Hi Keyur! Thank you for your comments on my padlet - they are very helpful! I like your Concept Map, and I think your topic identifies a crucial component in our students' educational support networks. I would love to learn more about how parent engagement drives or hinders student engagement. Does your scope include early childhood? I think that is an area where we see the benefits of parental involvement directly impacting a child's development is literacy (reading with children) and vocab building, for example. How are you approaching the issue of "pseudo sophistication" where children are forced to "grow up too quickly"? That is lack of parent engagement, and quite frequently not by parents' choice. (As was my experience in Teach For America - parents were working 2+ jobs and were not physically home to engage with their children.) I like your treatment of community factors and cultural capital. I also am curious to know how you (and the literature) define parent engagement. Are there existing frameworks or "checklists"? Because I think parents engage in different ways and it is important, as you create this desperately needed change in your school community, to empower parents themselves to define engagement and create scalable, sustainable ways to stay engaged. Great work so far - looking forward to seeing where your research takes you!

Hi Kr-

I was really intrigued when listening to the explanation of your concept map. As you noted in the feedback you provided to me, there are some similarities in our settings. The themes or buckets you have identified really seem to make sense to me. They are all big topics but each potentially contributes to the level of parental engagement. I think one factor you identified - the fact that parents/families don't see similar demographics reflected in the faculty/staff is probably more of a factor than we might realize. The issue of "pseudo sophistication" seems to be one that could have many subsets as well. An article I came across in my research that may be applicable is:

Lakin, R., & Mahoney, A. (2006). Empowering youth to change the world: Identifying key components of a community service program to promote positive development. Journal of School Psychology, 44(6), 513-531.
