Due to the lack of nutrients that the soil has in the Amazonian Savannah, the leaves of the trees, shrubs, guacos, epiphytes and the Moriche Palm in the biome are mostly thick. Furthermore, communities of Heliamphora, which are insectivorous plants, are found in the Amazonian Savannah. These species live in the thin layer of soil resting directly on the bedrock. These characteristics also shows adaptation of the different species of Heliamphora plants to their environment, in which soil lacks of nutrients, and because of this, these communities of plants need to eat insects in order to get the majority of their nutrients.

The fauna of the Amazonian Savannah is diverse and have all kinds of curious animals. For example, The yellow-banded poison dart frog is characterized for having vivid colors on their skin, which serve as a warning to other animals that they are poisonous, making most of their potential predators to stay away. Furthermore, this specie has an excellent vision, which helps them to find food on the soil of the Amazonian Savannah. On the other hand, the Capybara, also known as “Chigüire”, is an excellent swimmer. This skill is enhanced by its webbed toes. Having excellent swimming skills allow Capybaras to hide in the water when they are threatened. They are so well-adapted that they can hold their breath for up to five minutes !

Mutualistic: Capybara shares habitats with many other species. Some of these animals benefit from the Capybara, as well as the Capybara benefit from the other species. For example, birds stand on them and pick the bugs and debris from the Capybara. Mutualism occur, while birds are getting food, capybaras are getting clean as well.

Commensal: The yellow-banded poison dart frogs founded in the Amazonian Savannah have a commensal relationship with humans, in terms of medicinal use. Scientist have discovered that they can use the poison that the frogs excrete as a painkiller, which is more powerful than morphine. This is a great benefit to humans.

Parasitic: Many mosquitoes are founded in the Amazonian Savannah. Mosquitoes land on human for food. When they are sucking the human’s blood, saliva from the mosquito is entered directly into the human’s blood stream. That saliva can cause diseases such as Malaria and yellow fever. This is an evidence of parasitism, in which the human is affected negatively and the mosquito benefits from the relationship. So, be sure to bring mosquito repellent !
