This genre is about people, historical or political figures, sports figures, media artists, visual artists, and musicians. Biographies are written in various formats. Likewise, to informational books, this genre must be authentic and accurate. Characteristics of biographies include extensive research on the person from multiple sources, illustrations to connect the reader to the person's life, work, and personality, and realistic portrayal of the person. Some examples of biographies include autobiographies and memoirs, picture books, and complete biographies (Young et al., 2019).

Informational

The genre must consider the five A’s. In summary, the author must have authority/competence on the writing topic; the content must be factual, making complex concepts easily digestible to the young reader; use a variety of narrative devices like alliteration, similes, and metaphors; and strong visuals to go with the information (Young et al., 2019). Informational genre texts include Encyclopedia, All About...Books, photo essays, life-cycle books, and informational books in content areas ( science, social studies, math, music, & arts) (Barone, 2010).

Typically, the author will create a fictional main character embedded in a historically accurate setting (time, event, etc). Characteristics of this genre include historically accurate content, multiple perspectives throughout the book, and language that is reflective of the time, to name a few. The author must create a solid young lead character in children's literature so the reader can connect with the book's content and the reference to the time frame (Young et al., 2019).
