The author says that Elizabeth's work was cut out for her because her first class did not follow rules, were behind their grade levels, and struggled with attendance. The author states that "Some were considered “incorrigible” and unwilling to follow school rules; others were frequently truant; some could neither read nor count; others were several years behind in their grades, and many had health problems that interfered with their school attendance and ability to learn." The students in Elizabeth's class did not like school and did not think school was for them, so they did not listen or follow rules. Therefore, Elizabeth had a hard year ahead of her.

According to the text, some students "were considered "incorrigible" and unwilling to follow the rules" and some students "could neither read nor count". This means that there were several behavioral challenges along with deficits in reading and math skills.

The author would say that Elizabeth has her work cut out for her for multiple reasons. Per the principal, conditions in the neighborhood furnished high truancy rates and discipline issues. The city superintendent stated that many of the students were "incorrigible", would not follow school rules, were behind in their grades, and had health problems that would interfere with their ability to learn. Elizabeth herself even noted in her article that the students felt school had nothing for them. With all of these negative factors about the school, when discussing her job as a teacher at the school, it is logical that the author states that Elizabeth has her work cut out for her.

RA - The author would say that Elizabeth has her work cut out because of the conditions in the neighborhood primarily having to do with discipline and student absentees. The author stated, " Some were considered 'incorrigible' and unwilling to follow school rules; others were frequently truant; some could neither read nor count; others were several years behind in their grades, and many had health problems that interfered with their school attendance and ability to learn." This quote demonstrates that students in the Henry Street School were facing problems that could make it difficult for Elizabeth to successfully carry through her job as a principal. There are many problems to tackle in the school and many might be out of her control such as the health problems that might interfere with students coming into class.
