Tests Interpretation

For tests number one and two, I received the codes IER and IRC/ICR, respectively.

I can say that the results I received are trustworthy and dependable. The reason for this is because I noticed that for both tests, I received very similar results with two of the interest areas appearing in both of my codes (investigative and realistic). To add, my highest interest area (investigative) and lowest interest area (artistic) was consistent for both tests! This means that I can count on the results as being fairly reliable in terms of my occupational interests.

One thing I found interesting after taking the Holland Career tests was how similarly the scores I received resonate with my personal self. I was able to understand this once I compared my personal scores with a distribution of the percent of people who also took the test from a graph given. Specifically, I noticed that when compared with other people, I scored relatively higher on the 'Realistic' and 'Investigative' categories. Thinking back to myself, I can see why I got this score since I'm a person who is very technical and is very evidence-based. On the other hand, my 'Social', 'Conventional', and 'Artistic' categories were lower than what most people received. This is expected seeing that I'm not really social or very creative.

Another thing I found interesting after taking the Holland Career tests was my recommended job paths. As my highest category was 'Investigative', I was suggested careers that were in the STEM field. For example, computer science, biology, engineering, etc. This is relevant to my personal choice of becoming a doctor. To become a doctor you are required to take many scientific based courses, so STEM is a huge part of my career, both educationally and in practice. Hopefully, what this means is that my future career will work well with my personal traits!

The first most important piece of information that I learned from Chapters 13 and 14 that will help me "live life to the fullest" when I reach late life, is to first live a happy and non-regretful life then also keep myself occupied with important goals.

In page 379 of the book, under the section "Decoding Some Keys to Happiness in Old Age," the author speaks about ways to live out a happy and fulfilling life. Erikson's Psychosocial Stages is referenced at the top and what's important to understand is that the primary task in late life (Age 60+) is integrity versus despair. Therefore, in order to "live life to the fullest," one must be content with their life thus far and not have any lingering regrets from the past which would cause despair, much like how Erikson mentioned. The only real way to accomplish this is by acting now in the present before late life arrives. If, however, one lived a life that was full of guilt and despair, they should take advantage of the present and not dwell too much on the past. Setting goals for yourself is an excellent way to develop this notion and allow for inner growth.

Based on the survey, my calculated life expectancy is 87 years. Compared with the average United States male, I'm expected to live 7 years more.

The first most helpful piece of information that I have learned from taking this quiz is the importance of flossing every day. I always make sure to brush my teeth after every meal, but sometimes I may slack on flossing. Taking this quiz, however, has made me rethink my decisions. I learned that I can add up to a full year to my life expectancy just by flossing every day! In the feedback section of the survey, I read that chronic gum disease can lead to many cardiovascular problems such as strokes, heart attack, heart disease, and plaque formation in the arteries. Regular flossing can prevent all this by reducing the risk of chronic gum disease which can in turn keep your heart healthy!

The second most helpful piece of information that I have learned form taking this quiz is that I should prioritize regular checkups a lot more than what I currently do. Due to me not going to the doctor, I have no clue as to what my blood pressure and blood sugar is. Furthermore, I haven't had any cardiovascular disease risk factors checked such as cholesterol levels which make it a lot worse. Hypertension, as the website says, is a "silent killer" so therefore, if I don't get checked I may be putting myself in risk for a heart attack in the future. I almost never go to the doctor for checkups because I tend to downplay its value, but I now know that I should at least be having annual checkups so that I can put my health first!

After taking the "living to 100 calculator" quiz, I was curious enough to research about the creator of the quiz, Dr. Thomas Perls. After reasearching his biography, I learned that Dr. Perls is a researcher who specializes with and studies centenarians, or people who live to reach the age of 100 years old! Therefore, I felt that putting a picture of a supercentenarian would compliment the topic for this section.

As this course comes to an end, theres a few things that I want to touch on that I liked a lot. So firstly, I liked all the discussion post assignments and how well they allowed for me to critically think about the course material. But what I liked even more about each discussion assignment was that it wasn't just any normal 'monotone' discussion post. Each discussion assignment had a special aspect to it that would make it special and unique from another. Throughout the semester, we used canva, flip, online quizzes, and research for our discussion posts. I think that's what I liked most about the class and this is what separated it from any other discussion post you would be asked to make in another class. Another thing I really enjoyed was the oral exam. I really wasn't expecting an oral exam when I registered for this class, or for any online class in general. At first, I was really stressed at the thought of having to be tested orally in an online environment, but after the exam, I found out that it was a lot easier than what I had anticipated.

To conclude this section and the final discussion post, I have to write about some things that I would like to be changed but I can't really think of anything to put down. At the very least, I have only one pet peeve which was not being able to copy quotes from the textbook in order to reference in discussion posts (possibly done that way in order to prevent plagiarizing). However, I wouldn't consider that as something I disliked about the course because that was something that had to do with the textbook provider, Achieve. Nonetheless, having to type all the quotes from the textbook letter by letter was kind of frustrating and I hope achieve implements a feature to change this.

From my point of view, to live life to the fullest, would not mean extending your life as far as you could or taking life extending supplements. For me, to live life to the fullest would mean to live life without any regrets. That's why the information I brought from the text is what I believe is the most important.

After finishing the quiz, the first most interesting piece of information I learned is that my diet is the one and only factor that's negatively affecting my 'RealAge'! Unfortunately, I have a really restricted diet and tend to eat the same things with little to no variance every day. And although they aren't processed or necessarily unhealthy foods, what makes it bad for me is the absence of vital nutrients that you commonly get from foods like grains, veggies, fruits, fish, nuts, etc. Sadly, it's going to be hard to fix this as I don't really have the time and effort to balance my diet but I'll try my best.

The second most interesting piece of information I learned is that finances play a large part in determining a 'RealAge'. When taking the quiz, there was at least three questions that asked about my financial stability and how I felt about it. If I had to take a guess at the correlation between finances and my real age, I would say that because I don't have to worry about money and I'm not in any stress because of it, my age is younger.

My Ideal Life Stage is Middle Childhood!

Out of all the life stages we covered this semester: Infancy and toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, emerging adulthood, early adulthood (30s), midlife (roughly 45-65), young-old, and old-old, the life stage that I think is "ideal" is middle childhood. I feel this way because I think that of all the stages, middle childhood had the most to learn about. From what I read, I feel that middle childhood was the stage in which a person would be undergoing the most development. In fact, in Chapter 6 of the book, page 188, it's mentioned that Erikson and Piaget see middle childhood as the stage in which we first mature or become adults. This hints at the idea that we learn the most in this stage of life. During this stage, a lot of our motor skills expand. Also, our brain as well as executive functions improve as written in page 188. Last but not least, we also develop emotionally in this stage since we become more self aware and exhibit more prosocial behaviors, page 189 of the book.
