In TKAM the “n” word was used most of the time as an insult, but today, children and adults are more educated about the “n” word. Children today don’t only use the “n” word as an insult, but for some black people it could also mean friends.

“Scout,” said Atticus, “nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything—like snot-nose. It’s hard to explain—ignorant trashy people use it when they think somebody’s favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It’s slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody.”
(Page 124, Khai's book)
Analysis: This part where Atticus explains to Scout about how the term Nigger-Lover, uses the ‘N’ word in a very effective way because he explains that it has no use or power over him. The ‘N’ can be used to really offend someone but Atticus makes it as if it is a powerless word. Nowadays, the “n” it self even if you relate to it in anyways calling someone by using the ‘N’ word could really make someone very angry and offended.

“Don’t you believe a word he says, Dill,” I said. “Calpurnia says that’s niggertalk.” - Analysis: Even black people say the word and uses it normally.
(Page 28, Henry's book)
Analysis: The word “niggertalk” in this case means the thing that you say is bad. This is quite surprising because Calpurnia says it herself even though she’s a woman of color but she's making fun and talk bad things about her own culture.
But nowadays people with color are very proud for their culture and won't insult there own culture.

Francis looked at me carefully, concluded that I had been sufficiently subdued,
and crooned softly, “Nigger-lover…”
This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth. My left impaired, I
sailed in with my right, but not for long. Uncle Jack pinned my arms to my sides
and said, “Stand still!”
(Page 112, Pedro's book)
In this passage we could see that Scout has had it with Francis calling her father a "nigger-lover", this passage is saying that the "n" word could be used to make fun of people and when said in the wrong time or in the wrong way, it could make people really mad.
