I wanted to extend to all of you a warm welcome to NURS 519: Forensic Scient. Since this course is designed to have us work together, I wanted to provide you with information about myself. I live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I frequently have the opportunity to watch deer walking in my yard while I enjoy meals with my family. I am excited to finally enjoy the warmer and longer days of light that are part of the wonders of spring.
I started working at Drexel in 2003 and have been working full time since 2006. I teach in the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs both online and in person on the Drexel campus. During my doctorate work, I completed a qualitative study related to the experiences of registered nurses who worked in the emergency department in screening for intimate partner violence. I find qualitative research fascinating as it adds the depth to quantitative research ( both are essential components in working with populations).
I am excited to have the opportunity to be working with you this quarter.
Below I attached a picture of what i think would be a great place to spend a spring day.
I look forward to "seeing" and working with all of you online this quarter.
Dr. Fay-Hillier (aka Dr..

Greetings,

My name is Jason Empson and I am 42 years old, married with a blended family that includes 4 wonderful daughters ages 21, 18, 15, and 12. I was born in Southern California and lived there until my early 20's- raised in a small mountain community, Big Bear in the San Bernardino mountains. I joined the Marine Corps right out of high school and ended up with a knee injury during a training exercise which left me without a career, no backup plan and no idea where I was going or what I was doing. I spent the better part of my 20's wandering from job to job trying to find where I fit it; I've done electrical work, drywall, security, worked as a bouncer, personal trainer, warehouse person and delivery driver. I found my way to Northern California and in school for massage therapy. After graduation I worked with a wonderful chiropractor for a few years before the economy took a major downturn and clients couldn't afford to keep paying for massages. No income meant no bills were getting paid and faced with the prospect of being homeless, divorced and a very bleak job market I moved North to Oregon to live with my parents (they moved out of Ca. shortly after I joined the Marines) and return to school once again. Friends suggested I consider nursing since I had enjoyed working in massage and helping people get better and recover from injuries- and nursing would be much more recession-proof. Cut to me ten years later having stepped up the ladder from CNA in a Skilled Nursing Facility to a float nurse in our local hospital to now working my dream job- RN in the Emergency Department. I've been here for five years, have completed my BSN and recently have begun to take on other projects such as ED champion for code stroke project re-work and initiation of code sepsis. I am also adjusting into my new role as preceptor/mentor for a recent graduate and new hire to our department. My goal is to continue to move forward with my education and obtain my MSN and FNP where I then hope to work in this very same ER as a provider. I'm leaving myself open to options in case I find something else that really excites me during my clinical rotations but I'm pretty set on staying in the ED. I am also taking the minor for forensic nursing and can see a future of me working with our county medical examiner who is also an FNP.

My wife is also a nurse, and is currently in her DNP program (4th term) at one of our "Sister Universities"- Frontier. We live on a ten-acre ranch; have 20 chickens, 7 cats, 3 dogs, 3 goats, a turtle, several goldfish and 5 horses. We are both members of the Mounted Sheriffs Posse and spend most of our free time riding or participating in community activities related to the posse. I also train in competitive pistol shooting as part of the Posse Pistol Team and will be competing for the first time with them this Summer! So, needless to say we keep pretty busy around our place. I am not a big fan of travel and vacations- I prefer to keep it local and just go camping and enjoy our beautiful Oregon Coast during the summer. I do however have a favorite vacation- Honeymoon to Monterey and Santa Cruz. I suspect it has more to do with the company I was with as to why that's my favorite vacation though!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Stephanie Bourdeau. I recently relocated from Savannah, GA to Guam. I am an Active Duty Nay nurse stationed at the Naval Hospital in Guam where I work as the clinic Manager in the Pediatric clinic. Previously I worked on at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as a shift nurse and charge nurse on an inpatient pediatric unit. After three years I transferred to Naval Hospital Beaufort and worked on a multi-service ward, and then served as clinic manager of the Medical Home Port. I am originally from Lancaster, PA. I am married and have two Labrador retrievers. My hobbies include traveling and basically any outdoor activity. We’ve recently traveled to Italy, France, and Prague and are planning to travel to Japan this summer. I am interested in taking the course because I have an interest in Nursing Forensics. I am a trained SAMFE and provide Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Exams for Active Duty military rape victims and suspects. I hope to learn more about offender behavior, examination of injuries, methods for obtaining complete histories, and forensic toxicology. Overall, I believe this course will be extremely beneficial and applicable to the care I provide to both victims and suspects.

Hi everyone! My name is Dina Ruzzi. I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Duquesne University, I decided I needed a change of scenery. I moved to Washington, D.C., where I have worked as a pediatric intensive care nurse for two and a half years. After living in the city, I moved to Arlington, Virginia where I currently reside. My family consists of my mom and dad, a twin sister, a younger sister, and an older brother. We also have a cavapoo named Lacey. I love going to the beach and traveling to new places. This fall I will be going to Greece! I have never been to Europe, so I am very excited about this adventure!

I have always thought forensic nursing would be interesting to learn and explore, which is why I decided to join this course. I have little experience working with forensic sciences. A small exposure that I received was that I worked in an emergency department in college for an internship where they occasionally conducted sexual assault exams. It was interesting to learn about the different test that are done during this emotional process. I hope to learn more about different types of violence and crimes, how to detect for them, how to further investigate them, and how I can aid victims as a nurse. I cannot wait to start this course and I look forward to working with all of you!

My name is Alexis Lewis. I currently live in Chestnut Hill, PA. I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. I was interested to take this course because I have always loved forensics. I am that person who probably watches every investigated tv show and documentary. After graduating from Widener University in 2015, I was interested in finding a nurse forensics course. I am still greatly interested in the world of forensic science and nursing. I currently have no experience in forensics. I have taking care of patients that have been victims of elder abuse in the forms of neglect and financial abuse. I hope to learn information about crime classification and forensics that I can hopefully utilize in my current job. I also gain some insight to if this might be something, I am interested in doing for a long-term period. I am currently a staff nurse at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. I work on a GYN/Oncology unit. I am in the MSN Women’s Health Track. This is my third quarter in the track. In October 2018, I gave birth to my first child named Aiden. I have attached some photos. My husband and I also have a dog named Sasha; she is a 4-year-old lab/boxer mix. I am looking forward to this course and getting to know all of you.

Hello all,

My name is Julia Kennedy and I currently live in Delaware and work in the emergency department at Wilmington hospital. I am involved on the trauma clinical leadership team there and the decontamination team. Both teams are uniquely different but I love the variety of skills I learn from each. I graduated from University of Delaware with my BSN in 2012 and I am enrolled in the MSN nursing innovation through Drexel. I have been in the same emergency department since I graduated in 2012 and has been part of the growth of almost doubling its size and becoming a level 3 trauma center. Working in an inner-city emergency department has opened my eyes to a new world of violence and crime that has peaked my interest into forensics. Victims of violence, whether it be gun shots, stabbings, assaults, domestic violence, or drug related, frequently visit our emergency department. I am interested in ways our team as a whole can better care for them, as well as have a better understanding into forensics.

During my free time I enjoy doing anything outside, especially hiking and exploring national parks. One of my favorite vacations was traveling to Zion National Park and hiking the area there. A goal of mine is to travel as much as I can. I also enjoy wine tastings and if I had more free time would love to be a sommelier. I look forward to a great quarter and getting to know everyone better!

Good luck!

The picture below is of my parents, my brother and myself.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Danielle Jordan. I am a 26 year old, living in Philadelphia with my Fiancé and our adorable pup, Denali. I graduated from Drexel’s undergrad nursing co-op program in 2016, and have been working at in the Emergency Department at CHOP ever since. I am now back in graduate school to become a pediatric primary care NP. I took a forensic science class in high school, and have always been interested in the topic ever since. I am not a specifically trained SART nurse in my department, but all RNs are trained to assist during SART examinations (which happen far too frequently for a pediatric ED). When I am not working, doing schoolwork, or wedding planning, I spend all of my free time outdoors. My family loves all things nature, especially hiking, camping, boating, wakeboarding, and snowboarding. We also are avid travelers. We recently went to Portugal and Morocco and are looking forward to our summer trip to Greece. I am very excited for this semester and look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hello Everyone, My name is Mary O’Malley and I live just outside of Boston with my three teenage children. I grew up in the area and have spent most of my career in oncology, at this time I work in an outpatient oncology center in Boston. I am very excited to take this elective and find the topic of forensics fascinating, learning about how this subject applies to healthcare should be very interesting and informative. The only experience I have had with a victim of interpersonal violence/crime involved elder abuse and uncovering an unsafe home environment for one of my patients, this conversation occurred due to a routine assessment question regarding safety at home and solidified the importance of this type of questions for me. I look forward to learning more about this topic with all of you and wish you the best for the semester. I went to Sedona during March break and have attached a picture that sums up my trip! 😊 Mary

I received my bachelors in nursing from The Catholic University of American in Washington, DC and right now I work as a Postpartum/Mother-Baby nurse at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, VA. I am enrolled in the Women's Health/Gender Related NP program. I am the oldest of 3 girls. My younger sister is a medical student at VCU and my youngest sister is just finishing up her undergrad studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville Ohio.
I chose to take this course as one of my elective requirements for the Women's Health/Gender Related NP track because I have always had an interest in the topic of forensics. Growing up I always watched shows like CSI-Miami, Law and Order, and Bones and it was so intriguing. Although I didn't end up going into Forensics I thought that this would be a fun class to explore since I still enjoy the subject.

My name is Sara Hartropp. I am a Montrealer living in the suburbs of Baltimore. I am pediatric nurse with experience working with the general pediatric population and in intensive care. I do have experience working with victims of violence. I have admitted children for non-accidental trauma, shaken baby syndrome and sudden instant death syndrome. Amongst the adolescents, I have cared for victims of accidental medication ingestion and gun violence. I chose this course because I am curious about what happens surrounding the incident and how, as a nurse, can I contribute to preventing these incidences from occurring.

I love to swim and do yoga. I have had the opportunity to travel around the globe, so my next vacation, I will be a visitor in my own backward as I will be heading to Eastern Canada. I plan on eating all the seafood.
Hello everyone, My name is Estrella Catherine Villarreal from San Antonio TX. I preferred Catherine as this is the name everyone calls me at work. I am working at Brooke Army Medical Center as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse. I have been a nurse for eight years. I am currently working on my NP which I will continue this coming Fall 2019. I found this Forensic Mental Health and Psych Mental Health NP are much alike yet unique and different. The main point is the assessment and working with the clients as a person without any personal judgment and a good understanding of our profession. The reason why we choose such a career. I graduated Master in Human Relations at Oklahoma University, Master in Nursing Administration. I loved psychiatry and nursing. Both are my passion which I believe this class will be fascinating and appealing while working in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Health environment.I look forward to our interaction at the discussion board — best of luck to everyone.

I currently work as a Registered Nurse in a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I am currently seeking to obtain my NP in Acute care and Primary care Pediatrics. I chose this course as one of my electives because I have always had an interest in forensics. While it doesn’t completely relate to my major, I am hoping that I will be able to learn something I can apply to my major. I look forward to this class and getting to learn a lot of new and interesting things.

Hi there! My name is Katie Hall. I currently live in West Chester, PA with my husband and our two labs, Porter and Stella. I am interested in taking this course because as a future pediatric NP, I am aware that I may be one of the first and only people that could potentially help identify and advocate for victims of child abuse/ violence. I currently work in a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit and do not have much experience working with victims/ survivors of interpersonal violence/ crime, however, I am aware that it is something I will need to continue to assess for in the acute and/ or primary care setting. I hope to learn more about how to identify the populations at greatest risk, subtle warning signs, etc. and ultimately improve my patient advocacy skills for this population. When I am not working, I like to travel and spend time with our family and friends. I am looking forward to a great semester with all of you!

Hello everyone! My name is Kate Barcoski. I am from Philadelphia, PA, not too far from Drexel´s main campus. I am interested in taking this course because from the little experience I have with caring for patients who are victims are interpersonal violence, I have learned how important and difficult it is to do so. I currently work on a pediatric surgical/trauma unit where I have encountered patients who are victims of violence and crimes, such as hit and run accidents. I also attended a conference last year about caring for victims of sexual assault. I hope to learn how to adequately care for these patients and how to handle such situations. A little information about myself includes that I am an animal lover and I enjoy traveling. I am currently in Mexico on my (delayed) honeymoon from my wedding this past September. I look forward to working with everyone this term!

My name is Amy McClintock, I just celebrated my one year wedding anniversary on St, Patrick's Day. I have always been interested in forensics and have worked mostly in the ER in my 11 year nursing career. I currently live in Las Vegas, NV and worked at Sunrise hospital in the ER at the time of the shooting out here. I was fortunate not to be at work the night of the shooting but to see what it has done to some of my coworkers is gut-wrenching. I would give anything to have traded places with them. We see a lot of gang and drug related violence and discussing the cases with metro and CSI is always interesting. I am currently obtaining my Adult Acute Care NP and look forward to this class.
-Amy

Hi Everyone,

My name is Shanerha. My background is that I originally worked as a supervisor then manager in retail while I was supposed to be paying for nursing school straight out of high school. The company I worked for went out of business in 2009, and I used that opportunity to return to school. I enrolled in an LPN program and completed that in 15 months. And I was back in school for my RN six months after graduation.

After completing my RN, I continued working in SNFs/rehabilitation nursing centers. After less than a year of that, I became the nurse manager. I loved that position but hated that I was unable to make significant changes for the residents and employees. I do pride myself on being able to lower the nurse to patient ratio on my floor during my time there. After completing my BSN, I got a position in a hospital on the postpartum unit. Women's health is my passion so I am grateful for this opportunity.

Although I have no experience in forensics (besides learning how to do/read a rape kit when I took general biology), I thought this class would be interesting after reading what the class entails. I love law and order SVU. I also have a passion for victims and being able to identify and help them. I live in Philly and one of the biggest things here is human trafficking. I think this course would assist in helping me to identify victims. As a woman, and a mother, I feel it is important to identify predators, and to teach my children how to do the same thing, just to protect themselves and be conscious of their surroundings. One of my goals is to open a shelter for victims of domestic violence. So there is many reasons why I chose this class and why it's appropriate for me.

I look forward to talking and working with all of you. Here's to great quarter!

I work in Harrisburg, PA and grew up in a small town about 30 minutes north. I am recently engaged and my soon to be sister-in-law loved her forensic nursing course and recommended I take it. Where I work, we do not typically have open cases, but we do have mothers who have been victims of rape and domestic violence in the past. From this class I hope to learn about a different specialty of nursing and how I can relate forensic nursing to my current employment.

One show that pops out to me when thinking of forensic science is CSI which is both interesting and sad at the same time. I look forward to learning some new skills this semester. I just recently took a position in our float pool in order to sharpen skills elsewhere in the hospital. I live in Bucks County, PA approximately 30 minutes from Drexel's campus. Often times, I work with patients who are victims of gun violence, hit and run accidents, and non-accidental traumas. I'm hoping this course will better prepare me to continue working with these patients. A little about me is that I love, love, love dogs! I have a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel named Tucker who I basically treat as my child. I also LOVE the Eagles (and Phils and Sixers) and I have had season tickets to the Linc for 3 seasons now. Also, I just bought my first home with my boyfriend. I'm hoping everyone a quick and painless quarter! Nice meeting you all!
