Dimension 1: Science and Engineering Practices

Purpose: Science Practices are what scientists do in order to examine and explore the world. Engineering Practices are what engineers do to draft, create and construct systems. The purpose of these practices is to indicate to students that our scientific knowledge broadens by using the same set of practices as scientists and engineers. Students are doing the practices rather than learning about them, which results in students being more engaged and therefore learning more.

Science and Engineering Practices:

Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)

Developing and using models

Planning and carrying out investigations

Analyzing and interpreting data

Using mathematics and computational thinking

Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)

Engaging in argument from evidence

Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Example: Students will use the practices throughout the science/engineering process in order to deepen their knowledge and understand the importance of each practice. For example, engaging in argument from evidence is a very important step because students learn that we must support our argument with evidence we have collected.

Purpose: Crosscutting concepts are used as a way to connect the different domains of science, because these concepts can apply to each domain. The purpose is to create a link for students to connect the ideas of scientific disciplines and conceive a scientifically-based perspective of the world.

Crosscutting Concepts:

Patterns

Cause and effect

Scale, Proportion, and Quantity

Systems and System Models

Energy and Matter

Structure and Function

Stability and Change

Example: Students can see how Crosscutting Concept 5, Energy and Matter, is crucial to comprehending Life Sciences, and is also an important factor for comprehending Physical Science, Earth Science, and Engineering.

Purpose: Disciplinary Core Ideas are the essential ideas in science and engineering fields of study. The purpose of these ideas is for students to build their knowledge of each core idea upon another while advancing through grade levels.

Core Ideas:

Physical sciences

Life sciences

Earth sciences

Engineering, technology and application of science

Example: Through life sciences, students learn about organisms, ecosystems, heredity, and evolution. Students build their knowledge of life sciences through each aspect of this core idea.
