The X-Men heroes are born with their powers, which occur due to a mutation in their dna that allowed them to obtain such abilities. This is a prime example of how important and sensitive the study of genetics is. Wolverine is able to regenerate at an alarmingly rapid rate, Professor-X can read minds, and magneto controls anything magnetic, all due to a mutation of a DNA sequence which then allowed for a new type of protein to produce.

According to the film, "The Allegory of X-Men", Stan Lee created this new team at around the same time as the youth protests were being led. The X-Men were a reflection of those fighting for civil rights - they represented people fighting to fit in and be normal in a world where no one wants them.
