Because it is the largest biome, it is also the biome that is taken from the most, and the one I believe is the most endangered. This biome is the one most frequently altered while simultaneously being the least protected; while temperate grasslands cover about 8% of the earth's surface, only 3.4% of that is protected in some way. In addition, these lands typically being flat make them more susceptible to being used for the production of crops, for the development of energy and mining, and other forms of urbanization.

This diagram illustrates the effect the Neolithic period had on the number of people able to be fed through the utilization of various agricultural methods. As you can see, hunting and gathering lifestyles were only efficient at feeding maybe one person per square kilometer. As farming methods develop, efficiency increases 1000 times. Modern farming has made it possible to feed 1000 or more people per square kilometer, which also allows for more population growth.

I chose this picture because I think it really embodies one of the biggest changes, and also one of the biggest controversies that has resulted from the Green Revolution, GMOs. Our foods, especially meats and produce like tomatoes, are noticeably bigger than when I was child. This modification takes place without any really say so from the products' consumers, which has led to a lot of controversy about consent between consumers and producers as well as the issues of how these altered products are affecting human biology.

I think the most influential plant-derived chemical would have to be morphine, a pain reliever derived from the Papaver somniferum (poppy flower). It can be taken on an as-needed basis or for constant pain relief. I think it's the most important because it was the first natural product that gained commercial status, introduced in 1826, and this chemical paved the way for all natural remedies later introduced and the growing use and public trust for natural products.

If the policies in place continue to not acknowledge the negative effects industrialization is having on the environment, then I envision that officials will just continue to ignore what we are doing to our planet. This picture symbolizes that to me, in reference to rising ocean levels. I think people have an invincibility complex and don't truly believe the global warming effects they hear about will actually come to fruition, but ultimately we cannot outgrow or outsmart the planet.
