After several attempts to kill him, a group of Serbians finally succeeded by shooting him and his wife in the streets. Amid very high tensions throughout all of Europe, the assassination of this man was the trigger for the start of The Great War. Ferdinand was in line for the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his assassin was Serbian. Austria-Hungary used this assassination to justify declaring war on Serbia. Because of the complex alliance system that was in place, many other countries joined in.
