There were many civil defense videos and films during the Cold War. These showed different civil defense trainings and the importance of individual roles in preparing and surviving nuclear attacks. Cold War civil defence films often naturalized nuclear attacks. Most had the technique of scaring the viewers then comforting them to get them to comply. Many minorities weren't included in civil defense planning so the image of surviving as a community was geared toward white and middle-class citizens.

This film taught viewer to "duck and cover" when and if a nuclear attack occurred. It told them that there might me warning ahead of time of these attacks but not always so they'd have to be prepared. Though it taught people including young children to be safe in this time of danger, the duck and cover wouldn't actually help save them if there was a nuclear attack.

This film also showed how to prepare and stay safe for nuclear attacks. Evacuation exercises were done to help people know beforehand what to do and where to go. This film also tried to reassure viewers if they could survive natural disasters, they could survive a "hurricane of glass and fire" from a nuclear bomb. The film shows a fake city being built to test if it could survive an atomic blast. These tests made people realize the power of nuclear weapons and reminded them they needed protection and could get that protection from civil defense.

When i was researching this topic, I thought seeing all the ads and watching the civil defense films was very interesting. I can't believe that back then, people actually thought duck and cover would save them from a nuclear attack. Maybe it was more to give people false hope. I don't think that naturalizing nuclear attacks was the best idea. If I were living in this time period I would want the whole, plain truth given to me. Though it would be frightening, especially for children, to learn, I think this would be better so citizens knew exactly what they were dealing with.
