Began in 2011, with the interim president at the time, Bashar al-Assad. He began a harsh crackdown on peaceful protests through the country. He used tanks, attack helicopters and artillery against protesters. Torture and execution of children became more popular with the attackers. More protests spread which caused more destruction. The attacks and counter attacks lead to a civil war. The Islamic extremists spread to Iraq. In 2013, ISIS added chemical warfare to the civil war. 240,000 people had been killed ( almost half of the county's population). 4 million people have now become refugees.

Kurdish Genocide

It was a systematic attempt to exterminate the Kurdish people in Iraq. Ahfal operation in late 1980's. people would be tied together , shot and killed and fell into mass graves. Towns were attacked by chemical weapons. Women and children were taken to camps while men and boys of fighting age were killed. It was only considered a genocide after decades of fighting and killings. 8,000 male Barzanis were killed by 1983. Families were torn apart and survivors still have severe health problems. 4,500 villages were destroyed between 1976 and 1988.

* 1 million people have dissapeared since 1960

*50,000-280,000 died

*70% of the "missing people" were men.

*90% of villages and more then 20 small and cities were destroyed.

It has been one of the deadliest conflicts since ww2, over 5 million killed. targeted attacks toward civilian clashes between national army, rebel groups, UN peacekeepers. Millions were abducted, killed, and raped. Abductions and forced recruitment of civilians mostly children. 2.9 million are displaced. most of the fighting is over materials like gold, diamonds, tungsten, and tin. it is also known as the rape capital of the world.
