Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem Massachusetts July 4, 1804. The Hawthorne family, (originally spelled Hathorne), had been in Salem for many generations. Nathaniel Hawthorne is the great-great grandson of Salem Witch Trials judge John Hathorne. Nathaniel was haunted by his connection to his grandfather and his past. It was guessed that he added the "W" in his last name to disconnect himself from the things his family did.

(a) (b)

Hawthorne was interested in writing many tales and romances. He also wrote his early ancestors and the history of colonial New England. Even during that time, Hawthorne's writing style was old-fashioned. Many of his pieces had topics of sin, repentance, and guilt. Due to a loss of the family fortune and lots of land over many generations, there was a believed curse over the Hathorne family. Nathaniel wrote about this curse in may of his pieces, including in the introduction of The Scarlet Letter, The Custom House.

(a) (b)

The biggest theme in The Scarlet Letter is sin, like many other pieces by Hawthorne. Throughout the novel, sin is projected and shown as the cause and result of many people's actions. It is a terrible thing and causes people in the novel, like Hester, to be shunned and isolated. The only way she can help herself, is to constantly ask God for forgiveness and repent. Hester's letter she wears on her chest, is a visual representation of her sin. This is a prime example of how important the theme of sin is in the novel.

Another main theme of The Scarlet Letter is isolation. Hester, because of her sin, has been isolated from the community. She is seen as an outsider, and her feelings/needs are completely disregarded from the villager's minds. Hester is not the only one to be isolated in the novel, her daughter Pearl is isolated as well. She is seen as an outcome of a sinful decision, and is neglected from the community like her mom. They live together, away from everyone, on the outskirts of town. This shows how important isolation is throughout the novel.

One main symbol in the novel, is the scarlet letter itself on Hester's chest. The letter symbolizes many things, including sin, Hester's mistake, her shame, isolation and other things. It seems to burn into her clothes and take over her appearance to the people around her. The letter was put on Hester's chest as a reminder to everyone, including herself, her mistake and the sin that comes with it. The overtaking presence of the letter isolates Hester and Pearl from the outside world, and because of it, piles of shame linger over Hester. The letter represents many things in the novel and is a big symbol throughout the story.

(c)

Another big symbol in the novel is "the black man". This man is mentioned a couple times in the novel: Hester thinks of the letter as "the black man's mark", Pearl refers to Chillingworth as the black man, and they wonder if the black man left his mark on Dimmesdale's heart. The black man represents Satan/all evil in the novel and is a very important symbol in the novel.

(c)
