Discoveries that were made by Galileo include, observed swinging lamps in Cathedral of Pisa and found period to be independent of the amplitude – idea for a pendulum clock. Used inclined planes to prove that bodies do not fall with velocities proportionate to their weight but proportionate to time. But perhaps his most famous invention was the telescope. Galileo made his first telescope in 1609[1], modelled after telescopes produced in other parts of Europe that could magnify objects three times. He created a telescope later that same year that could magnify objects twenty times to thirty times. He used this telescope to look at the moon, find the four satelites of jupiter, watch a supernova, verify the parts of Venus, and uncover sunspots. His discoveries proved the Copernican System which states that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun. Prior to the Copernican system, it was held that the universe was geocentric, meaning the sun revolved around the earth. (This was this opposite to the catholic belief)

"Inventions, Discoveries of Galileo Galilei That Shaped Modern Science". mid-day. N.p., 2017.

Galileo despite the smart man he was never married, he had a brief relationship with women called Marina Gamba, Marina lived in Galileo's house in Padua where she bore him three children. His two daughters, Virginia and Livia, were both put in convents. He then moved away from Marina with his son Vincenzo. Vincenzo was as much of a success as his two older sisters, he made his living lutenist, composer, theorist, singer, and teacher. He published a number of books of the musical score, these books were unsurprising based on the maths of music and harmony (things such as strings and note lengths).

Galileo Galilei’s view, when we look at it now a very casual and reasonable view. However, in the 1570s there was an honestly padlock on views outside of ‘god’, this meant that for a man to be trying to help people believe the Copernican[1] model of the universe, this showed that instead of earth being the centre of the universe despite popular belief the sun was the centre of the universe. This caused a lot of controversies. This also put himself at risk, as many at the time view some of his ideas as devil sins. So yes in relevance to the current view and guidelines Galileo’s views were truly radical. He encourages people to look out of the box, he challenged the essence of most beliefs of the time. This meant he was also putting his own life in danger for the greater cause of the people. He did this in the way that is unlike some other radicalisms, he would only reveal his ideas to those who wanted to hear it. He would not push his opinion of the world (no matter how supported it may have been) onto the world.

[1]"The Copernican Model". Polaris.iastate.edu.

Galileo galilee’s view compared to the view of the Christian (the popular belief of his nation) had many extravagant differences. From the point of view of science. Things that people account for when making prediction/ determinations of subjects and variables, they look for hard facts based on reason, empiricism and evidence. Scientist such as Galileo is then expected to put theories in place that can suitably take into account for all of these things. However, on the other hand, religion firstly comes from an older time when information and sources were far more limited even compared to Galileo’s information. This means that teachings were based on prophecies and tradition passed on from generation to generation. This meant that there were many differences and many rules that were being broken by even talking about these new ways. This meant sadly for Galileo that he would have people over his shoulder constantly stressing him to stop his research and come back into his place in society.

I have found researching Galileo galilee very different. He compared to another scientist in the world was a lone soldier in essence as much as all science research is also very original his, in particular, was so far apart from anyone at the time. Not only this but the courage and sacrifice that was made by this man I’m sure will never really stop amazing me. As much as he is no mother Teresa he spent 11 years in different colleges and universities.

While Galileo Galilei’s invention and maths advancements did never positively affect anyone’s life in the way of many other revolutionary’s/change agents (Martin Luther king) his radical views and courage when facing difficulty and never before seen possibilities and issues, was an amazing example of true radicalism. “The beliefs or actions of people who advocate thorough or complete political or social reform”,[1] this perfectly sums up and thusly proves the point made throughout this text.

[1]"Radicalism - Definition of Radicalism in English | Oxford Dictionaries". Oxford Dictionaries | English.
