What is Naturalistic Theatre Acting?

Naturalistic theatre acting is what we are living at this minute. It is type of real life acting that a Theatre Practitioner, Constantin Stanislavski have created under his Invention called “Method acting”. Naturalistic acting does not include any form of thinking, sometimes you would not even know that you are doing Naturalistic acting. The naturalism inside of us is being expressed within us regardless of what we are thinking. However, there is nothing worse than overreacting in scenes and making the audience feel like there is no emotions given in the play. Once actors/actress mess up the naturalism then the vibes of the audience suddenly decrease causing the scene not to be back to its normal form.

Naturalistic Theatre acting originated back in 19th Century Stanislavski followed a theoretical movement named realism and he was trying to work on realism. He believed that Naturalism meant that the belief that a human character is formed by what people interpret from their family and the environment. From a very early age, he decided he wanted to keep his performance activities a secret until 1917 when he was funding for his new experiments in acting and directing and with a lot of unsupported behaviour, he only became a amateur when he was 33. Around 1877, He decided to keep notes on what he was analysing on his problems and acting and self-notes to a point where he created his own Stanislavski "system". Later on, He decided to experiment with keeping in roll (maintaining a Characterisation) and also explored voice and body. In addition, He went to Maly theatre in Russia to pay attention to different actresses and actors. Once he got the use of the place and the idea of it, he called the Maly theatre his "university". Performances in Maly University were given Foreign stars which influenced Stanislavski.

Intentions of Naturalism

The creative intention of his style of theatre was to make the actress/actor feel like there in their own comfort zone speaking as if they are actually in the correct space at the correct time doing the exact actions that they were doing at the time. He also felt like he was fed up with the way that a lot of drama theatre looks unrealistic and it wasn’t coming from the heart so the idea of naturalism was so real it was like watching a CCTV Camera. The Target Audience for Naturalism would be for people who are very good with non-fiction writing, English Literature and also people who are interested in Real- life issues. The Goal For Naturalism is to make the audience feel the same emotion as you of which you expected during or at the end of the play. Another Goal is to make the performance as naturalistic as possible with NO breakdown of any scenes.

The vocal skills the actor need to create to naturalism is a various types such as pitch (high or low), Pace (fast or slow), Projection (loud or soft). The reason why I listed the following because the actors need to emphasis words in a certain way to bring out the characters personality whilst there speaking.

The physical skills that might be required to create naturalism is use of Large and small movements. The reason for large movements because it can shows the obvious for example if someone is very happy and vibrant or someone that is Angry and Furious. It shows the audience and the cast how broad you’re feeling. The reason for small movements because it can show the less obvious that brings suspense and tension in the play for example biting your lip could mean that you’re curious or suspicious of something/someone.

The role of a naturalistic theatre director is to analyse the characters of the play/scene and take in approach that the actors should really go deep in the role that they are playing. The actors should go deep to a point that they do not have to remember what to say but to feel and speak as the character in the play/scene. Another role of a naturalistic theatre director is to make sure that background and the actors are all natural as in making sure that actors do not overreact and make the scene very believable to the audience.

The directorial skills which might be required to create naturalism are use of focus and a lot of pass events which have already occurred in your life. I think this because in order to make a naturalistic performance, you have to use the past as a guide of what you’re going to do and act and get in the position of your past can help not only the scene but connect more to the cast and director. Another reason I want to expand on is focus as not getting out of role unexpectedly or having to switch of.

Role of Naturalistic theatre playwright

The role of a naturalistic theatre playwright is to write a naturalistic play. If the spelling of the playwright looks as if the words sound like it is to extra or exaggerated then it’s the job of the playwright to change it to make it sound natural. The playwright would have to read the script that he/she has already made continuously to make sure that the stage directions and sometimes think the actors position and speak it out.

The type of theatre it was originally arranged for was..................The type of theatre style was naturalism and the purpose of it was to make it as if it was a real life situations and also for the audience to really connect with the characters as they were acting. An example of a scene where a stylised technique was used was when............... I would describe the dialogue as very heart-felt because I could understand what individual characters were going through without even experiencing it for myself. This dialogue symbolises different types of Relationships which builds or lose a lot of Love. This dialogue help tell the story by the actors presenting their actions and emotions very well and the scene and transition was well exciting because I was so desperate to find out what was going to happen next. The movement was effective was...........................................................................They used props

Review on Goodnight Mr Tom

The role I played In Goodnight Mr Tom was Tom. The purpose of my role was to make William Welcome in the countryside and in his household and to gain his trust whilst hes away from home. My personal contribution in today's workshop was making sure I was in role the whole time so people can feed of my vibe and atmosphere in being in a countryside during war. My creative intention was deciding how the set and the props were going to be more country-like that fits with the script.I developed this by having individual props to show a meaning such as a wearing a mackintosh for warmth. In my opinion, i stayed true to the acting style process so for example I had the low and hard accent to show that I was in the moment of an old man. My personal account contribution to the quality of work was very effective. I demonstrated 'best practice' of my role in performance in my rehearsal. The purpose of Charlie was to make sure that was to make sure what they was saying and doing, fits with the whole Living during the war themes. Their Contribution to the quality of the work was making sure that you don't get out of role even if it was even a tinniest bit otherwise we would have to start again so for example if I ''Tom'' acted very happy even though he is a very grumpy and old man then it would have to be changed until it is right. I adjusted to other performer by being patience when someone else is talking I would have to communicate with the play but not the actual actor themselves but keeping the whole scene continuous as it is Naturalistic.
