The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a graphic novel as “a story that is presented in comic-strip format and published as a book”. This fictional genre makes it a lot easier to relate to characters, opinions and expressions. It includes fiction, non fiction and collections of poetry.

Graphic novels have many elements such as the caption, speech balloons, special effect lettering, frames, gutters, the foreground, midground, background, shading and color. These elements are very well represented in Marjane Satrapi’s The Shabbat. Joshua Wimmer from Study.com states that “the image of the graphic novel reader is mature and academically inclined”.

Many reasons that people chose to read graphic novels is because they are fast paced, high quality language, the images give an overview of the story and they can be read over and over. Additionally people chose to read this fictional genre because "graphic novels are a more visual medium than traditional text". According to Shannon Maughan from Publishers Weekly "sales of graphic novels in North America topped 535 million dollars in 2016", showing the amount of Americans that enjoy this fictional genre.

The highest ranked graphic novels include Maus, Watchmen, Nimona, Daytripper and This One Summer.

Kelly J. Mays characterizes a short story as "sometimes called 'flash fiction' or 'micro fiction' and generally not much longer than one thousand words and sometimes much shorter"(32). Short short stories include genres such as action, adventure, drama, fantasy, mystery, political ,etc.

When an author is writing a short short story they have to master the elements of character, setting, plot, theme and conflict. According to Katie Kazoo, an American writer, these elements "keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow". Remarkable short short story authors who master these elements include Edgar Allen Poe, Kate Chopin, Mark Twain, Jack London and Charlotte Gilman.

Piotr Kowalczyk an author at Ebook Friendly explains reasons anyone should start reading a short short story for instance it is a way to "bring back the habit of daily reading, a great read in between novels, a convenient way to try new genres and authors, an incentive to reach for the next read and a certainty you will read the whole piece". Short Short stories are a great way to get your reading schedule back on track if you feel as though you are stuck and cannot find a good read. They are always enjoyable reads and page turners.

The ultimate short short stories include To Build a Fire, The Lottery, The Necklace, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Gift of the Magi. Steven Petite a writer at Huffington Post explains why short stories matter because they "bring more pressure, because like poets, each paragraph, sentence, and word is more important than they would be inside a large novel."

Short short stories are becoming more and more popular and relevant no matter how much technology takes over. People appreciate short short stories a lot more these days.

Sources:
Kazoo, Katie. The Five Essential Elements Of A Story. www.katiekazoo.com/pdf/KK_FiveEssentialElements.pdf.

Kowalczyk, Piotr. “6 Reasons Why You Should Start Reading Short Stories.” Ebook Friendly, Ebook Friendly, 18 Feb. 2017, ebookfriendly.com/benefits-short-stories-list/.

Petite, Steven. “Why Short Stories Matter Now More Than Ever.” The Huffington Post, TheHuffingtonPost.com, 18 June 2015, www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-petite/why-short-stories-matter-_b_7093528.html.

The exact definition of a novel is "a work of prose fiction of about forty thousand words or more" (Mays 31). This fictional genre has many sub genres including science fiction, historical fiction, thriller, romance, mythology, and horror. Many people pick which novel they want to read based off of what sub genre it is.

Novels are comprised of the same elements as short short stories and short stories.
