After he finished school, a became a navigator and made many voyages to countries east of the Mediterranean Sea. He was also a very excellent sailor. In 1524, he and 50 crew members sailed from Madeira, Spain looking for a water route to China. Two months later, he sailed along the coast of North Carolina. When he was exploring the inland off the North Carolina coast, he saw the water of a bay, and he thought it was the Pacific Ocean. He continued sailing and entered New York Bay. There, he sailed a boat as far up as the Narrows. He anchored at Newport, Rhode Island. He returned to France in July 1524. He provided the first description of Europe, which was actually North America. In 1528, he sailed to the Caribbean and landed on the island of Guadeloupe.

Some wealthy Italian bankers and merchants hired Verrazano to find a water route. When he was sailing along the coast of North Carolina, he landed and found friendly Indians. Later, when he anchored at Rhode Island, the Indians weren't as kind. Verrazano thought that a new world lay between Florida and Newfoundland because of his explorations. He also believed that there was a water route to China.
