Bioterrorism is a very serious issue the world is facing presently. Bioterrorim is terrorism involving the release of toxic biological agents with the intent to harm many numbers of people. If a bioterrorist attack is carried out successfully many casualties will occur. The levels of fear and anxiety are usually heightened when a bioterrorist act is committed compared to a regular terrorist attack because of the contagious victims and the uncontrolable spreading of the disease. Many will not know if they have been affected for at least a few days to let the effects of disease set in which is why there is so much fear.

(Lambert)

The effects of bioterrorism are very prevalent in the world today because there is many diseases out there that can be taken for terrorists to use on cities and large populations. There is a large number of diseases that can be used to create many casualties. The disease that is shown in the book is small pox which is also known as variola major. This disease is very deadly, but was deemed nonexistent except for being kept in labs in Russia and the United States. Though there have not been many well known bioterrorist attacks done in the past, there may be more in the future due to technology enhancing and becoming easier to spread deadly diseases and viruses with no footprint left behind.

(UCLA Health)

Mitty Blake is the main character in the book Code Orange. He is a teenager that lives in New York City and lives a regular life. When he is looking through old books for a school biology project, he finds an old book dating back to 1902. Mitty opens an envelope that falls out of the book and found something very strange. "Mitty undid the string and peered in, but the opening was narrow and he couldn't see exactly what was down there. He inverted the envelope over his hand and tapped. The contents slid into his palm" (Cooney 11). Mitty found major variola scabs in this old book and doesn't know if the remains are still active. Mitty has to face the problems of whether to bring the problem to the authorities or to keep the problem of being infected himself. When Mitty is reflecting of whether to make all of New York City scared because of him being sick or to keep it to himself he is taken by a terrorist organization. The terrorist group tries to take Mitty to spread the disease that he potentially has. The attempt of spreading the disease fails due to Mitty outsmarting the terrorists and locking them in the cell they were keeping him in. The spreading of the disease did not work because even though he had side effects of small pox he did not have the disease. He changed throughout the book by becoming more courageous in his words and actions to protect New York City. This is shown when he has been taken by the terrorists and put in a cell. " You will not dance in my streets. Mitty Blake rolled over. He kicked the cellar door shut"(Cooney 193). Mitty locked the terrorists in the cellar and this showed his courage and change near the end of the book.

(Cooney)

The solutions to bioterrorism are very complicated because there is always terrorist organizations that want to carry out attacks, therefore there will always be threats of bioterrorism. The United States and many other countries around the world have been using new tactics to spread awareness in the past and present. One way countries have done this in the past was to sign the agreement at the Biological Weapons Convention in 1972. The agreement was signed to improve the international co-operation in the field of peaceful biological activities. The United States has taken precautions to future attacks in purchasing vaccines of smallpox. Bioterrorism is a increasing risk and will be more prevalent in the future due to technology becoming better and more efficient .

(Grabner)
