I think we as teachers
often disable our students without meaning to by labelling them and then expecting them to live up to that label. We should strive for an inclusive education for all which ultimately means that all students are able to learn together in one space to the best of their ability. This means differentiating the curriculum, environment and method of teaching. The UDL framework can guide teachers in the planning process to really consider the diversity of students that they have in their class. However, we must be careful not to just provide different work or resources for only the 'different' students but rather we should be offering the choice of different resources to all students and encouraging them to decide how they would like to learn and how they can best show their knowledge within assessment processes.

The method and practice of teaching inclusively is something that can be stipulated in policies etc however teacher and school attitudes are the core of inclusion. Educational curriculum frameworks are guides that give examples and suggestions of teaching/learning however again, they really are only as good as the teacher implementing/facilitating classes. It is encouraging that inclusion and inclusive practice is becoming more prominent in frameworks etc but the reality is classrooms and attitudes do not often focus on how to change the environment instead deciding that it is too difficult to accommodate those not in the 'norm'.

Inclusive pedagogy means no restrictions. Like Zoey's mother saying, why is it wrong when Zoey fixates on a cat? Everyone has different concerns. The correct answer to who gets to make this decision should be that educators ask open questions and respect honest answers. Universal Design for Learning, as an inclusive education principle, empowers students to create their own learning meaning and also enables the educators' reflection and reset of assessment criteria.
