Teachers are working hard on creating TPACK lessons and learning new SOS strategies. They all in the process of developing stations for units taught within their rooms. It seems like we get the momentum going on each session then once I leave it stops so next visit on Nov. 30th I will work with our leaders as a group for 1/2 day - I am very excited and so are they to have this extra amount of time together.

Next we met as a group and we discussed creating stations in more detail - hopefully I answered everyone's questions I reminded them to look at an upcoming unit and with your EQ guiding you - create stations that are student centered also to keep TPACK in mind as they design the stations - use what they already do and enhance it. I also modeled TPACK lessons in Erin's and Jessica's classes - the two strategies I used was "Silence is Golden" and Table Top Texting. Lastly I worked with Jill to design her Farm to Table stations.

This really helped all of them create stations for 2 units and feel very comfortable in implementing them! I then did a 2 hour training on DE resources and Board Builder. Only about 5 teachers had logged in prior to the training so now all logged in and practiced creating boards and searching. Forgot to get pics!

December Stations Reflection

I assigned this board as a front-loader to a new SS unit on Labor Movement and Women's Rights. The board concentrates on helping students understand the roles of women during this time period. I allowed the students to work in small groups of four or five, as I am very limited in my devices. I was amazed at how little I had to instruct the students after only logging in to Discovery Education one time before. They quickly picked up on how to log in and maneuver around the site.

An improvement I would make to this lesson is to show the board and give my specific directions as a whole group, prior to allowing the students to log in and begin the board. I think this would give some of my students a better understanding of the assignment from start to finish.

Overall, I feel this was a very successful station. I was pleased with the result.

The teacher from across the hall ended up visiting my room to observe the lesson. She seemed very impressed with how quietly and diligently my students were working. She even asked me to share this board with her so that she could use it with her class.

The students did a good job of going through their board to complete each station - they directed their own learning and collaborated. I observed and then video taped one group doing excellent collaboration to explain an answer. They talked out the question then talked out their explanation for their answer - I don't see this often anywhere I go. For a few students this comes naturally but for most it does not - it will be exciting when all groups can do this in all grades and classes. Jessica Tooley: Jessica has put together a great plan to have all the 5th grade students use stations help understand possible careers. Great job in getting all of 5th grade to incorporate boards into their classes. We came up with some strategies to use during the videos as well as several summarizing activities. Can't wait to hear how it goes! Kristy Paddock & Jill Parker: I observed/assisted with math stations on 2D and 3D shapes. It was great for me to see how two teachers took the same stations and added their own twist. The kindergartens worked really well together and clearly understood the expectations. Jill had her students in one group use the Ipad video to interview one another - this was very effective to get the students to talk and explain what they were doing - it was quick and the students interviewed each other very quickly with guided questions - something to try if students have a hard time explaining their thoughts due to shyness - with the Ipad - they displayed no shyness.

March 29, 2017
Erin Painter - 3rd Grade - Learning Lab - Math Review: Erin created 8 student-led stations for students to collaborate with each other in order to review math concepts. Six teachers were a part of the learning lab. After the lesson, I spoke with the teachers to answer any questions as well provide any clarity on what they saw. The teachers were so impressed with how engaged the students were in each station, they loved how students were able to state what they learned at their station..."I Can" ....., and wanted Erin to share her stations were them so they could use them. Questions that needed clarity were: how often do I need to do stations, do you only do this for review (no), and what is the process a teacher goes through to make the stations.

Jessica Tooley - 5th Grade - Math Stations - Customary Units of Measurement: Jessica wanted me to how to use a Single Point Rubric for the stations today. I have been using a Single Point Rubric with my DLC teachers for reflection but one needs to definitely find strategies for using it during a lesson. For example, if students have work to complete to show their understanding - do not give feedback on the rubric until after the teaching session - instead walk around and listen to the students and give feedback on their collaboration. Before students continue with their stations the next day - hand back the feedback and allow students to ask questions.

Kristy Paddock and Jill Parker - Kdg - were on a field trip with their students.
