         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>American Progress</em>, (1872) by John Gast, is an allegorical representation of the modernization of the new west. Columbia, a personification of the United States, is shown leading civilization westward with the American settlers. She is shown bringing light from the East into the West, stringing telegraph wire, holding a school textbook that will instill knowledge, and highlights different stages of economic activity and evolving forms of transportation.</div><div><br></div><div>This painting shows "Manifest Destiny" (the belief that the United States should expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. In 1872 artist John Gast painted a popular scene of people moving west that captured the view of Americans at the time. Called "Spirit of the Frontier" and widely distributed as an engraving portrayed settlers moving west, guided and protected by Columbia (who represents America and is dressed in a Roman toga to represent classical republicanism) and aided by technology (railways, telegraph), driving Native Americans and bison into obscurity. It is also important to note that Columbia is bringing the "light" as witnessed on the eastern side of the painting as she travels towards the "darkened" west.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>22. september 1862 udstedte USAs præsident Lincoln den såkalde Emancipationserklæring, gældende for områder (Sydstaterne), der var uden for Unionens (Nordstaternes) kontrol, det første formelle skridt til slaveriets afskaffelse i USA.          <description><![CDATA[<div>28. august 1963 var en dag, der på flere måder skrev sig ind i verdenshistorien.<br>Det var dagen, hvor op mod 250.000 amerikanere, sorte og hvide side om side gik i fredelig protestmarch i Washington for ligeberettigelse og tildeling af lige borgerrettigheder til alle amerikanske borgere uanset race.<br>Og det var ikke mindst dagen, hvor præsten og borgerrettighedsforkæmperen Martin Luther King holdt sin berømte »I Have a Dream«-tale, der regnes for en af de mest betydningsfulde taler nogensinde. Talen, hvor King redegjorde for sine drømme og visioner om en fremtid i USA hvor alle, uanset race, kan leve sammen i harmoni som ligeværdige borgere.<br><br></div><div><br>Uddrag<br>In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.          <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>1882: The Chinese Exclusion Act. Lovgivningen blev underskrevet af præsident Chester A. Arthur og betød blandt andet et forbud mod immigration fra Kina i 10 år, ligesom kinesere, der allerede befandt sig i USA, ikke kunne få amerikansk statsborgerskab.</li><li>1921: Immigrationskvoter. USA's historie har budt på en række immigrationskvotesystemer, hvor et af dem blev indført i 1921. Her blev immigrationen begrænset til tre procent per befolkningsgruppe, der allerede befandt sig i USA i 1910. Det gik særligt ud over øst- og sydeuropæiske immigranter, der først i højere ankom til USA senere end eksempelvis nordeuropæerne.</li><li>2. verdenskrig: Jødiske flygtninge afvist. Mens millioner flygtede fra Europa under 2. verdenskrig, var USA særligt bange for, at spioner fra nazi-Tyskland ville få adgang til USA, og præsident Franklin D. Roosevelt begrænsede derfor adgangen for flygtninge til USA til 26.000 årligt. Særligt en sag huskes i USA's historie: skibet St. Louis, der ankom til USA's kyst med 937 passagerer, hovedsageligt jødiske flygtninge, ombord, blev afvist ved USA's grænse og sendt tilbage til Europa. Mange af passagererne menes siden at være døde i nazisternes Holocaust.</li><li>1950: Kommunister bandlyst fra USA. Selvom den daværende præsident Harry Truman nedlagde veto mod lovgivningen, lykkedes det den amerikanske kongres at udrulle "The Internal Security Act" (indenrigssikkerhedslovgivningen, red.), der gjorde det muligt at deportere enhver immigrant, der måtte tilhøre det kommunistiske parti, ligesom medlemmer af kommunistiske organisationer ikke kunne opnå statsborgerskab.</li><li>1980: Iranere forbudt adgang. Efter den amerikanske ambassade i Tehran i Iran i 1979 blev stormet, og 52 amerikanske statsborgere blev holdt som gidsler i 444 dage, udrullede daværende præsident Jimmy Carter en række sanktioner mod Iran, ligesom iranske statsborgere blev forbudt indrejse i USA.</li><li>1987: HIV-smittede personer nægtes adgang. Da HIV-skrækken var på sit højeste i 1980erne, blev HIV-positive personer nægtet adgang til USA, hvor Ronald Reagan var præsident. Skrækken var særligt baseret på en falsk overbevisning om, at HIV kan smitte gennem fysisk kontakt eller blot gennem ånde.
