The historic landmark, Samuel Dinsmoor's Garden of Eden. It's full of concrete sculptures with politically charged messages. Many consider it a visual representation of the Populist movement. I would take a field trip there for a Kansas history class, during a unit of populism and the post civil war era. Additionally, I could have students identify and interpret the message of a specific element of the garden, and relate it to the era.

Each second grade class will start their own popcorn business and will be competing with other classes to see who can make the most profit. In order to start this "business" the students will go the bank and learn about borrowing money so they are able to receive a popcorn machine for their business and other supplies. The students also will learn how they have to pay the bank back. The students will have to come up with a creative name for their popcorn business and design a logo also. The students will also have to decide how much they want to sell their popcorn. This will teach the students how to run a business in a fun and competitive way. This lesson will also help with counting money as well.

One resource I thought of is a bakery. If we were reading a book in class that related to baked goods, i.e. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, it would be cute to take students there on a field trip to eat a cookie and learn about how they are made. Another lesson you could incorporate here is with math. Baking involves a lot of math (measuring, adding, etc.) and I think kindergarteners or first graders would benefit from watching a baker make cookies and seeing how they use math to do so. Making a connection between fractions and measuring could be really interesting if it involved baking!
