AM: Today we have the pleasure to meet one concept artist from Dream Work's and Blue Sky's studio. And it was really inspiring to me, just to have the chance to meet someone of this area, the one that I'm most excited about is like a dream came true. So I payed attention in everything that he had to say to me and make some notes. To begging talking about him, firstly I'd like to show my notes:

> Shapes, take reality and put it in my own shape
> move "if you draw a horse, be a horse"
> influences: story telling "histories before drawing"
> blue sky studio
> en.movie.us
> Fellini's Satycon

*** Olivier.tossan@gmx.net ***

thorne of blood
on contact

This notes doesn't seem to mean too many deep things, but partly of this was that i couldn't take my eyes of him, afraid to miss something important that he could have to say.
But three of this notes were very important to me, and this were the three first ones.
The first is what he said in the beginning, about how he love to take reality and make it his own shape. I really admire that, how he loves his style and is going until the end with it. And was with his unique style that he accomplish to be part of this grand industry of animation, in one of the most famous studios of animation, Dream Works. And seeing he talking about Dream Works in general seemed to me like a dream, because of how much they valuable an artist and ask to him what he need to draw and create, so they can provide it, and how fun it was work for them. This made me want even more to work for them in California, I never though so much about it before, but seeing this really make me want to work for them no matter what.
And with this, we came for another topic, he said to us as well how he enter into Dream Works, and it was everyday sending emails to them with new drawings, and after a year and a half he received a call from Dream Works that was really interested in what he had to produce for them, and looking foward work with him. So, this made me realise that I can't give up even without any feedback or answer. I have to go on and try my best. (Really, really inspiring isn't it? aaa!!)
Another thing is that in Europe you have to choose between the options that you see, just like being a designer or a illustrator, but in United States, more knowledge better. If you know more things you're seeing like a interesting person to work with.
Well, coming back to my notes and the list that I've made to write this; he also talked about how if you want to be a concept artist or something like that, you have to draw a lot everyday. He said that the principal was to watch and draw, principally portraits of people. "don't do what school wants you to do, focus in draw" (i laughed a lot in this part, he was really nice and funny gosh). And so, he said to search for references not just in animation, but in art, movies and real life, so you can turn all this into animation.

PM:
So, after this session with him, I had to start my work. I already had the brief and my vague action plan, so I wasn't entirely lost. But I had a real problem here, I lost one week thanks to the dead of my grand father, so I am a little late with everything.... Anyway, in my action plan I didn't count that week. I had to start right now, so first thing that I thought it was already in my action plan and really good to inspiration was a mood board. So I went to Mac Lab so solve some problems in my padlet and to search for inspiration images.

Looking at my brief I found three things that I could put:
> Book vs animation (Pinocchio, Coraline, Bambi and Alice in Wonderland)
> Screen shots from Detetive Bolacha contra o Gênio do Crime
> Book covers of Genio do Crime in general

It seems like a simple thing, that would not occupy so much space but... Damn, I was wrong. It took me 35 pages in total, putting in indesign to put more images into less space. It was a total of more than 100 images, and here's why. Those books are normally classics, so they have a lot of covers and also, Disney's and Laika's concepts were really inspiring as well. It was not about just "book vs animation" anymore, it was also some concepts that would help me to have ideas and to inspire me for my own concepts and animations.
It still missing a lot of screen shots, but I'm going to provide it in this week while I watch "Detetive Bolacha contra o Gênio do Crime". Or at least is what I'm planning to do. And to take photos of this places myself, and then print and put here.
I couldn't print this images today, cause I didn't have enough cash to print all this images, so I had to leave it for tomorrow. I decide to print the brief and action plan as well to put in my computer. So I am going to do this tomorrow.

Glued my mood board on the wall, the way that I choose to. It was really difficult figure out how I could put those things in the wall. How I could connect things, movie and book, movie and visuals, what inspired me I. Those images, and also let some space for future things.
In the end I decide to put illustrations and screen shots related to Genio do crime and characters to be near me, like, really near. So I could take inspiration by near while I worked. Screen shots related to São Paulo and photo of those places some years ago and now would be near it as well, and the other space for animation, books and references the rest. This "the rest" part is bothering me a little, I still want to make some alterations in my mood board but seems like a good beginning.
Finally print my brief and put it in my sketchbook, to always look at it to have inspiration. Also printed my action plan, but I'm putting it week by week in my sketchbook to make a more detailed action plan to the week:

Tuesday & Wedsday: Start reading "Genio do Crime" and make notes
just like
> of each character or Turma do Gordo - appearence / - personality / - age
> Places in São Paulo that appear in the book
Academic support, tutorials in Toon Boom

Thirsday: try to find this places & take pictures
- watch: "Detetive Bolacha contra o Gênio do crime" < take screenshots of it

Friday: read academic essays and crits about Gênio do Crime

Also, I had a one to one meeting with Cezar where he look at all what I had until now and said it was a good beginning, but he wanted to see me looking at references that weren't about animation and I agree with him. I need to put more things into my research and look trough different stuff.

So, for today what I have to do was to start Genio do Crime and starting taking notes, and was what I did, when I arrive home, the first thing that I made was to look for the books that I wanted to leave here at EBAC, and that was:
Genio do Crime
Sangue Fresco
Coraline
Animator Survival Kit

(I have to bring later Pinnochio and Alice in Wonderland, but today I forgot)

I finished Genio do Crime with all my notes. I think that I made the necessary ones, since I don't think I'll have to look for more things in the book for a while.
I noted all descriptions that I could find about the characters, places in São Paulo just like I wanted and some expressions and things that I find that were really typical of this characters. I glued every single one of them in my sketchbook, since I take those notes in a smaller one easier to carry whenever I wanted to go.
I'm going to put some here to say things about them and then about Genio do Crime in general:

Pontos de encontro e lugares importantes sem endereço:
Ponto de Encontro, casa do gordo, quarto de brincar
Escola Primária três bandeiras
Fábrica de figurinhas escanteio

Expressões:
Batata!! > Bom
Papagaio > Droga

The notes were made in portuguese, since was easier to think in that language cause I was reading in that language and the original work was in that language as well. This are vocabulary and key places that don't really exist, but are show in the book and maybe will be important for it in the future.
Seeing the story, I think it would be impossible to recreate all of his work in just 3 minutes, 'cause Genio do Crime itself is not THAT big, but is considerably long in terms of history. A lot of things happend and if I would just summarize it all, it would lost the sparkle that my grand father's work has.
But at the same time, it is really good to interpretate in your way, since it doen't have a lot of description. He wanted everyone to imagine the characters in their ways, so in his contract with Global, he said that in the illustrations it was forbidden to show their faces. And he doesn't put too much description even in scenes with actions and places, just some things that you can know whats is happening and at the same time imagine how you want to. There's a lot of parts that he write things like "it was the most terrible fight that ever happen, it was full of kicks, punchs, slap (...)" and so go on, making you to imagine what really happen. I want to see how they made it in a movie, 'cause doesn't seem like an easy job, since it has a lot of humor in the write parts, like how he describe some scenes of the vocabulary and expressions used, and in a movie that is more visual it wouldn't be that funny.

Genio do Crime also, different from other people has a deep relationship with me, that knew the personal side of my grand father. I can garante one thing, it is his book. I don't know how to explain it, but sometimes seeing someone's work and then the person itself, you can't tell why it is that way, but seeing his work and the way he writes, I almost could hear his voice saying it to me out loud. A lot of his personality are in his books and how he writes it, so I want to make it special and how he would see and think "ok, this is something good". I remember one time how he talked to me about people trying to make comics of his books, but he always rejected things like putting glasses in Gordo, 'cause he thought it was a lazy thing to do, and he wanted something good. And that way I could learn a little what he want and what he didn't.

Today I was planning to read some academic articles about my grand father's work, but... I was forgetting that today we had a crit about padlet. And I didn't have anything ready. Also I had to glue things in my sketchbook and Lauren wanted to talk to me about my project, (that for some reason the brief weren't sent to her, what makes me a little worried about if I can actually do it or not). So... Yea, I ended up not doing this. What is a shame, 'cause... I didn't actually did much for my padlet either.
In this Friday I didn't have almost anything, principally in my reflection. Even if I came back to EBAC and was doing things when I arrived at home I just didn't have energy to do it. Anyway... I didn't have anything, I had to look through my padlets and do those things, add some references in my research, talk to Lauren... To many things to do, to worry about those academics essays, so I'll try do it next week, even if I was planning to do another things, I think it's fine. I can also look at home to those things, that I just need internet.
But... Anyway I couldn't do much things, I don't know. I tried to go trough some lab, but it was occupied by different people in different classes.
So... Yea. Useless. I tried to make a little in my cellphone as well but it wasn't working. So I just gave up. At least was not a totally useless morning, since I discovered with Julia that bring my laptop to EBAC could be a great idea to produce better. Yea, it was really usefull. I can garantee.
Anyway, than it was time for the crit, they put us with some random people of communication design to talk about our padlets, what we wanted to do for the final project and etc. These people had to give you a feedback and also some references for you to look at later. Mine was Edgar Alan Poe and James and the Giant Peach. Edgar Alan Poe was really useful, but for me I already have enough animation and need different sources right now, so it was something that I was really looking trough. But is good to see Edgar Alan Poe, since he somehow invented mystery novels. About my other things, I got a not yet, 'cause my padlet was almost blank. I'm happy to be filling it now. Next crit I want to have everything in day, so I can receive a more precise feedback.

And also, what I talked with Lauren: (she's an angel for having sending this to me by email)

> Bringing in theoretical research to your project. You need a complex problem. I suggested you look into critical and analytical texts of your grandfather's books - discover what his principal themes were, and what he was trying to communicate. In your chosen text try to discover what each character represented.

> Also think about installation. If you want to bring one of his books to life, how can you use your space to enhance the experience of this?

> How will you present your animation? Are you thinking about using a screen or projection? And why?

Well, started this week remembering the not yet that I receive from my collegues, even if I knew that it would happen, since I didn't came one week and in the other one I wasn't really ok for being doing reflections and putting my padlet in order, I bring my computer remembering Julia's advice and spent the whole morning doing reflection, research and etc.
Another thing that I did cause I already have done in the past week as a weekly action plan, saying what I was going to do that week, and in my action plan was saying to analyze more those animation movies that came from books and maybe try some character design. So... What could be good for me to do was read one of those books, maybe one of my grand father if I have some time as well and start the course of character design of Aaron Blaise that I got.
So, here's how my action plan to this week ended:

Things to do:
Character design > Aaron Blaise course
Analyse animations vs books (read and watch coraline)
Read +1 book from JCM (Sangue Fresco)
Read Genio do Crime official play (already did it!)

Monday: Read Genio do Crime's play // Start Aaron Blaise course
Tuesday: Watch Coraline and take notes // + Aaron Blaise course and practise
Wednesday: Start Coraline book (finish Sangue Fresco if possible) // Aaron Blaise course & practise
Thisday: Continue Coraline's book // Aaron Blaise course
TAKE PICTURES!!
Friday: Aaron Blaise character design

You can see that there's a lot of this course, but it is 'cause it's a longer thing and I have to get this straight, because it's a really good opportunity to learn a lot from an animator and it's about what I'm experimenting this week, character design.
Well, then before go home I read the entire Genio do Crime's play, since I it was very short.
I liked it much more than the movie screen play, and here I could see the difference between what another people and the author do, or even a better screenplay in general. 'Cause even if it's in a shorter version, there's no plot holes unlike the movie and it is really precise, mantaining a lot of scenes and stuff that are important and cutting out others. So that way you can see exactly what he wanted to show and what I can cut or not if I'm going to make some kind of adaption of his work.
It was good principally from two characters that I want to focus, (even if still two of them that i'm not yet); Pituca and Gordo.
Gordo com a sua torradeira e Pituca com o seu soluço.

In my action plan, today I was supposed to go trough the places to take pictures and then see the movie, but I want my photos to be taken in a more bright day, and today... Was raining a little, so I'll have to wait maybe until some more beautiful day or something.
So, what I did today was to watch "Detetive Bolacha Contra o Gênio do Crime" and see if I could spot the differences between the movie and the book, and also see some director interpretation of characters, visuals and scenes that weren't so clear in the movie.
Well, after watch it, I can't say that the movie is good, but it isn't that bad after all. But it isn't good either. Part of that is that a lot of context and things that has clear connections in the book are missing in the movie. Just like a part where Seu Tomé shows the factory to the children and how typos work, so Gordo could know how to manage them and leave a message to scape. In the movie this first part doesn't appear, and he just knows it without explain why, leaving a huge plot hole in a crucial part of the story. There are other things like, character missing in some scenes and isn't like they aren't a part of the story in the movie, but just don't appear in some scenes ( something like problem with parents of those child actors). And some scenes that doen't connect or doesn't seem so important in the movie different of how they were in the books, but I get that a movie has to cut some things in order to have a good duration of 1:30.
They change a little the personality of Mister John Smitch Peter Johny, he was more happy and cheerful in the books, and in the movie he's more serious. Acutally personality change was a constant thing as well, happen a lot with characters, just like Bolacha too. That was a way more serious and smart in the books, but still a good representation of him if compared with Mister's.
Genio do Crime was a dwarf too, and his descriptions were all couting with it and in the movie he was a normal guy. Also they cut some controvesous scenes that could be too much for children to see, but for me it was a shame, cause a characteristic of Genio do Crime was not treat children like weak easy manipulative babies, and they did it at the movie.

So... Starting the day watching Coraline.
Oops, lying, actually the first important thing that I've made was talk with Micheal about my project. And it was really clarifying somehow, 'cause now I know at least what kind of animation I want to do ( or a beginning ) that is a trailer from Genio do Crime of a thing showing all this works in general. Or maybe an opening, still think about possibilities, but considering the time that we have, this would be the best.
So, I started Coraline. In the beginning of the movie, I started to analise a lot about visual language, remember the feedback that Max the Mutt gave me about angles, close ups, different cameras etc etc. So, it as a whole new experience.
One think that marked me a lot was when they said that my story board doesn't show where they are and the context, so you're kind lost and don't know what exactly is happening right there. So better show the place from far away first, then going to show another things when people are getting interesting about you have to show them. And Coraline doesn't begin right that way, first they get into you a kinda close scene with the camera, not showing properly the space, just a metal hand sewing a doll out of nowhere and then, it show the pink house and a moving truck coming in, showing that someone is arriving there.
Another characters appear in that part as well, just like the strange russian man and after some of the old actress lady. And you can see and understand even as a child that this mysterious beginning was meant for you to feel curious about it and sense some mystery, not to be explained at that moment...
This also made me get an idea if someone made a Genio do Crime film, would be perfect starting showing a "tipo" machine making "figurinhas".
Anyway... Seeing the movie and not reading the novel first just make me wonder how I will feel about it while reading the novel, so I didn't finish it yet, I'm planning to before I read it better to compare and see some differences and what they made to adaptate it.
So, I watch some reviews, which weren't very useful since they treat you like you already read the book, and not a stranger or if you are going to read it as well, not something that you would watch to not read the novel. So, yea. Starting the novel already.
When I came back from lunch, I decided that it was time to start that Aaron Blaise course, thing that I couldn't do yesterday since I was fixing my padlet.
His course is just AMAZING and I couldn't recommend more it to someone who wants to be a character designer.
I only watch episodes one, two and half of three but I learned so much and my plans changed so much thanks to it as well!!
Actually, episode one is just explaining how things will work for you to prepare yourself. The episode two anyway, was about "what to do before drawing a character" and this is literally my stage right now, so it was really usefull.
First, you have to read and know this character. Ask questions about him to yourself, write a tiny profile... And then, research. Research about pirates if you're doing one, elephants if you're doing one as well... Do all research you can, 'cause if you're making a character from all you already now by your head, he will get really really cliche, nothing new or exciting, neither creative.
So... Thanks to that, I'm probably gonna try meet some children and draw it as much as I can. Find a style for this characters is important as well, understand it and following it too.

Today we had a whole day of a progress crit, that we show everything that we made so far for our motion collegues and then day said to you what you can improve, references and give some advices in general.
As you can imagine, at least for me I wasn't that advanced, actually there is a lot of things that I need to do in order to consider myself a good student again. Things are being difficult in this third part, and I don't know exactly why I'm so dismotivated, I hope this changes soon. Or I mean, not exactly hoping, I have to move myself to make it work, even if it is easier to be said than done. And seeing my classmates works.. Gosh, I felt like I was so behind them. It was like they all already knew what to do exactly, had a script in their minds and I'm stucked.
I read the book, see the movie and read the play and still. Not even a clue, one day I had a chat with Micheal and decided to do a trailer, but I wasn't sure about it either. But even so, it was really helpful for me to see all this.
Because seeing what they were doing I had at least a idea of what I could do from now on and what could be good to focus at, and that thing were a kind of script that I need to do.
And knowing that, present my work (I was the last one, cause I didn't have confidence enough to say that I was the next one to present or something), and... At least I figure out with all my research I wasn't that behind, I just needed to start experimenting this week and maybe to a more detail script and planning. But preseting at least I decided a few things;
> That I would write a screenplay just like if I was going to a whole animation of Genio do crime
> Then decide some scenes to appear in that trailer
> Research how trailers work in general
> Doing a story board of those scenes, and then doing the proper trailer
With this I have a better idea of what to do.
**find the notes that Bia made for me

Well, so how I decided that for me to draw a character design i have to see more and draw realistic things, maybe write a profile of my characters before doing it properly, so I spend most of my day just drawing those characters.
I kept thinking about what kind of bodies that I want to see to think about this characters, I needed some real children references maybe (this would be the best) or some images from internet. But the problem with images in internet were, I wanted to draw this characters in different angles and this would be difficult with random models of internet, besides, models in internet would be basically the same bodies types that were considered beautiful and equal. And also, more children the best. So I remembered some series and movies with differents bodies types, this were Stranger Things and It.
I searched for some reference in Brazilians tv shows, but it was no use, most of it didn't have the age that I wanted or close to it. But not worked, so I searched for more references even with American scenes but nothing that wasnt some average white people.
Also, I searched for some more character designs classes, and founded one really interesting talking about another way to do a character design, at least it appeared like another way to do it, even if I didn't reallu achieve this point into Aaron Blaise character design course as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5QgC5UVYlU

I hope to get better with it next week, but this... I didn't work a thing how I was supposed to do.
It's difficult for me to focus at home, I end up doing all other things than just draw what I need to.
I produce so many from what I could if I was at EBAC with no distractions, just work to be done. I'm really concerned about it, I'll have to work hard to form a proper routine and so can work better to have more results, experiments and stuff to present, to experiment and to do in fact.
Gosh, so few things that I could wrote today, I'm sorry but.. Yea.
I mean I watch a few things, but still, can't focus.

Missed that day. Is being a little difficult for me to get up and go to EBAC, and I don't know why. And it's a shame, principally knowing that I'm not that ok with my presence in EBAC.
Well, it's not only that though, I talked a little with my father and his girlfriend about that, they have experience in that area, and I discovered something... I couldn't wrote a whole screenplay and animate in that amount of time. There was no way that I could do that, but what I could do is some pre screenplay, like story line, resume and a treatment, that is a more minimalist kind of screenplay that you just essentially describes what's going to happen in your movie.
So what I did was to beginning it today, what I really wanted was to finished it, but at home was a little difficult, again my problem with concentrate.
I think I wrote something like tree pages, but maybe I was underestimating how difficult it was, because in some parts I had to analyse the movie or the book to make sure what would be better to that scene in specific.
At least I did some research about trailers, seeing Beauty and the Beast, Alladdin and some of Grinch.
I made some notes, and here they are:

Clichês of movie's trailers;

> Show a lot of funny moments, like jokes and other things
> Present the plot and what this movie will talk about somehow

> Talk about what this movie has, just like “magic” “enchantment” etc etc
> Usually 2:00, 3:00 minutes long
> There's always a scene that doesn't appear, just the audio
> In the middle of trailer, show a music that is important for the feeling that the movie want you to know what kind of people will like to watch

It's good, so I'm not that lost now, I have to study more, experiment, finish this treatment... But I think I'm in the right direction.

So, today I came to EBAC! And this doesn't make sense, because I didn't really had to go here exactly (of course its better, but you understand me), and yesterday... Oof I'm a failure.
Anyway, I couldn't resolve too much things related to EBAC anyway, but what I could do was continue that screenplay. I actually finished it!! A victory!!!
So, having the screen play I realise what scenes would be good to put into my treatment or not, actually I decided something like thirteen scenes, which is too much, and would require at least ten backgrounds, and six characters designs. It seems to much for one person in that amount of time...
I'm a little concerned about this.

It was really difficult to translate it, because this book is so Brazilian, so it's better to leave in portuguese.

Cenas que são potencial para o trailer:
I. Uma introdução as máquinas de fazer figurinhas

II. You can just see it trough a screen.
The only thing that I thought was maybe some kind of posters and those cardboard cutouts that appears in the cinemas for letting you excited about the movie, just like the trailer.
A A2 poster and a cutout cardboard. So I had to research more about this cardboard, how to do them or buy them. This kind of thing.
It was a good one to one meeting after all considering that probably without trying to talk about it, I could never thought about that.

Actually, the only good part of my project until now was the concept of it, pretty well structure in my write planning, script, analyses of those books. That part is good. But the rest, at least for me.. Was terrible.
I felt that Cezar didn't thought it was as terrible as what I was thinking, and just said to me to pay more attention of drawing and do properly what I want and pay more attention to padlet and my project book which is considerably thin.

After my progress tutorial, I was really convict of doing instead of just thinking, remember as well my talk with Micheal.
I thought that what would be best to start with was the children. Principaly with Berenice, since she was one of the most described characters in this book. And I had already studied a little thanks to that character design course how to draw kids with this age. Also, I got some more visuals references from some cartoons, just like the loud house, steven universe, south park and etc, to then make things easier and to have a notion of how I could make them.
But before begin it, I write of how i wanted them to look, to not just start out of the blue and asked some people of how they imagine them. Also some child drawings as well.
It was really fun to do them, because I got better results then what I expected.

Edmundo:

-Mais baixinho

-Porte médio

-Usa boné

Pituca:
-Mais alto, mas não muito eles têm uma altura parecida

-Bem magricelo

-Cabelos pretos grandes e encaracolados

-Provavelmente colocar algumas feições faciais do filme, porque meu avo amava essa Berenice

Seu Tomé:

-cartola, terno, bengala

-bigode

-uma corcundinha

-velhinho clichê bonzinho
- baixo e gordinho

Edmundo really looked like a protagonist. I thought about how a protagonist usually tend to have a more round face and to have a average appearance so that people can easily to put themselves in their place.
For Gordo, I looked a lot of Cartman of South Park and to some fanarts of him. He was the most difficult character to make, because he is comic and at the same time a really important and serious character. And I couldn't put glasses into him, even if it was a thing more logical to do that would make him more like smart and yet a kind of nerdy weird kid, but how my grand father already said to me that he didn't wanted gordo to have glasses, here I am thinking about other possibilities. Another thing was that some people appointed to me that imagine him with being really pale since he was kind of a spoiled child and every time he does some kind of exercise he turns red.
To Pituca I more kind of take in consideration the movie, and how I wanted to make characters with different sizes, since it happend a lot principally with childrens. So he was kind of a taller version of him in the movie.
Also, I started to do some draft of the backgrounds to do them properly in the future.

What I did was to do it digitally, so then I would see the colours and how they work, decide a pallete.

Im finally writing it. My thoughts.
I kept a long time out EBAC thanks of how things was going to me at that moment.
Firstly, I wasn't really working as I should this days. I was really anxious, about everything I was going trough. As anyone can see looking at my reflection of that part of the course and then comparing with my others, there's definitely something wrong with it. Usually I put a lot of details in everything and did deep analyses, of course you can find some like that, but not that many as it was before. And it was not only my reflection, but all my work in some way.
So, knowing that we would have a crit, I kind of freak out realising that I had no time to be working on this and how late I was comparing to everyone. So... At this moment, I couldn't go to EBAC and expose all my failures.
So, I kind of started missing classes and start get more and more worried. I notice that every time that I tried to work, my anxiety get in control of my body and I couldn't do anything but shake and think that it was impossible to finish it.
After talking to some people, I decided to do a kind of program of what I needed to do and how many time I would expend doing that; and in that I put
- Finishing character designs
- Finishing backgrounds
- Story Board
- Animate
- Box illustration
- Print this illustration
- Reflection
- Research
- Project book
It was pretty much it, but some of those things would occupy more than it looks just putting it's name on the list, mostly of animation itself.
And calculating it was... well... impossible. I had no time to finish it and I didn't know what to do.
So I kind of give up at that time. But I still had to talk with Micheal, it was kind of my last hope, since I still wanted to end this project a lot. I already had working hard on it, even if it was not that hard like it was supposed to be. And he gave to me the time that I needed, and said to go to EBAC and work, even if it looks difficult would be better than staying at home thinking how I couldn't do anything.
And this gave me hope to end it and continue my project.

It was time to do my most fined story board that looks a little like a animatic as well.

(And a little more, until the end)
Also started backgrounds.
I want to talk about my animatic in just one post, since it's easier for me to say how was this whole experience instead of cutting it into parts. Because in this days I was just thinking about how I should end it as soon as possible, so I didn't have so much time to think about what I was doing and to reflect about it at all.
Now that some time has passed feels easier to me.
Well, I am really proud of myself, even if I have used more time then I was expecting.
In my action plan, I was counting to have just to days doing this, and it was so much more... But doing this, I think that I turned everything easier, having all those keyframes ready, just waiting to animate properly. And also a lineart of all backgrounds, now I just have to clean them a little and put some colour.
And also I have already seen a lot of animatics of musicals in youtube, and some other things. I always thought that I wouldn't be capable of doing something like this, that it was impossible to me.. But here I am! I actually did it!
I tried some apps in my IPad to do story boards, but none of them seemed to work so I used my app for drawing, the name is Mediabang Paint. It's pretty good for a free app, and has a lot of brushes and other things, some people even compare to Sai. I know it isn't that good, but it is what I can purchase for now.
Anyway, it was terrible to save and it started to became really heavy, anyway I continued. And I could finish it! With my story board and my screenplay I could have a idea of what I wanted to do, but I wasn't sure if I was capable of doing it with more details. And doing it, was a perfect proof that I am actually capable of doing it.
And I feel right now that I can actually finish this trailer at time. Although, this brought to me another problem... I don't think I have time to record or put any kind of sound in this trailer. And that made me feel kind of worried about this all.
When I put those images together in a movement, they actually appear to be part of a animation, and it was just something that I couldn't believe that I could do. I tend to subestimate myself and think that I can't do those things. So I'm really surprised with myself, and happy that EBAC gave me that chance, because if were just for me I would never get courage to try and go this far.
Also in that time I have two progress tutorials with Cezar, one of them was to talk about my project book and the other one was to see how things were going in general.

Finished backgrounds.
I thought that I would make those backgrounds in something like five hours at maximum, because I had already the lineart, which was really difficult to make. But... I discovered something. Colours in a background and palettes in general are also really difficult.
I spent a lot of time trying to find the right colours to each part and also to see if they look like the mood that I wanted to put in each of those places, not with a deep study of colours meaning, but at least some kind of atmosphere that I could feel. So, it took me all day to finish it, I think I was done like in seven PM.
One of the most difficults backgrounds for me, was this one that I put here, that had a lot of tiny details, toys and etc.
So I tried to put a limited palette, to not get too messy. And it worked! Even if some more colours it was had some kind of same tone.
After finishing the backgrounds, I was finally ready to animate. I download the trial version of toon boom, since it lasted 21 days would be more than enough to me.
I was in EBAC's studio at that time, and I didn't realise something really important while I was there, I didn't have my wacom tablet there, so I couldn't animate. I went home, but I couldn't find it wire, and it's a specific wire of this tablet that I didn't find a way to replacing it. So... I get desperate thinking what could I do. I had my Ipad and just it, and thought it would be perfect it there's a way to use it like a cintiq or another wacom tablet and after a lot of research I found a way! To apps that did that work, one of them was called duet display and the other one called astropad studio. It took my a entirely night to set thing up, but finally.. I can start animate! Tomorrow is gonna be a great day.

I know that actually I have already talked about my experience today, but that previous part, I was talking about the whole animation and animating in general, here I want to talk about a more important topic that when I realise it, made me worried sick about it, and I'm not sure yet what should I do about it. I mean, I've been working hard for all those days and at the begginig I was being pretty optimistic about all this and how I could actually finish it at time to the exhibition and etc, and how even it that scene was difficult it would be like, 40% of my whole trailer when it was done. But then, I realised something very, very important. I was forgeting to count the time that I had predicted for those scenes in my screenplay and then apply them in my actual animation before anything else. And when I came to count those things, I realise how I had messed everything up. To show to you the problem more specifically, i can show part of the screen play and what time took to each part considering the narration that is happening at this moment:

First part: (animation, 5 seconds)
É o album de Edmundo.

Meu bom menino, preciso de você para descobrir onde é a fábrica que faz as figurinhas difíceis que o cambista vende. (10 seconds)

Coloca lentamente a figurinha do rivelino.

I mean, I already animated all of this, but it is far beyond from having that much of seconds. Maybe a little less, considering that it had some pauses for beginning timer again and beginning to talk as well. Anyway is far from having that amount of seconds. Actually I have like, half of it.
Apparently I let some things behind while doing my story board, principally considering that would be hard to animate later, but now I am feeling like it's missing some movements and actions that were in that screen play, and at the same time, I feel like some of those scenes couldn't make that much time as I put in the screen play. Now I realise something that I thought I wouldn't miss, but right now seems essential to me. A animatic in a video format, with sounds and counting time.
At the same time I feel like a failure, I learned the importance of an actual animatic.
I don't know what I am going to do, it is being difficult enought to animate this scene without all this time, and will be even more difficult putting it. Besides, there is somethings that I gave up considering how difficult it would be to animate it, just like the closing book.
Well, I can see some solutions for this problem:
>try to cut some words to let it fit into my animation (but to fit properly, it had to be like, half of it, so i don't know if it's entirely a good idea but i can at least use a part of this solution to my final product)
> try to slow down a little the number of frames per second ( i really don't want to use this one... it's already in 12, more slow than this would not be that smoothing and neither look like it is alive either)
> put some extra scenes that i was planning to cut in first place, like some part with "cambista" giving the rivelino sticker to pituca or something like that
> test with some edit in after effects or in premiere, maybe putting some effects between parts and this kind of stuff could put some extra time in it
> and do the actual animatic, with sound and addind parts and seeing if it's possible with that drawings the amount of time that i was planning to do

Gosh, I have so many things to do, and the deadline is approaching...

I
was
wrong
I mean, it was going all well. I could improve a little the Edmundo figure that was not a silhouette, it was great. I was having some issues about what should I do with his face, his body had already a good enough movement, but I didn't want to the face being blank, and I was not liking that much my other not silhouette Edmundo, that I don't like that much... But I don't have that time to improve right now, it is edible.
Anyway... I resolve to see some tutorials about lip sink and blinking, that were the too thinks that he was doing in that moment. It was a little difficult being my first time with limpsink and I kind of commited some mistakes, just like putting the eyes and the mouth in the same layer (a clearly mistake, since i had to do different animations in both) and it take me more time than it was expected to take. But then I could put Seu Tomé looking at him through the window and all camera movements necessary, I even had made a preview, see some mistakes and I was ready to fix it, but then, when I fixed it... I don't know why or how, but the layers and frames were still showing, but the drawing of that not silhouette Edmundo that was there... Just... gone. And I'm really frustrated, not only because I'll have to redo all his drawings and movements and fixing the network and etc, but also that I'll have to do the limp sink and blinking thing one more time and it already took me so long. And obviously, I'm afraid of losing again some things in the future.
Some mistakes like this were happening as well, just as the camera that changed place without I realise it was doing it. I don't know, but it was a little easy to fix at least. But I hope that it don't happen again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snG8TOmGlNw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMWiYIVoDis

Well, I'm surprised. I could resolve everything, not in a ideal way to save time, that would be recovering what I had lost, which were my other Edmundo screaming at the crowd, but at least I got something kind of better. This Edmundo had some mistakes that I was making since it was my first time ever trying to do a blink like these, or a lipsink. And it was even more difficult since I didn't knew exactly what he was going to say, since in that scene it's going to be a voice narrating everything instead of him saying actually something.
And the result was good considering that this time, instead of doing just a intuitional blink I went after some tutorials, see some more of lip sink as well... And it resulted me a more clean animation, that said in a better way what I was trying to. And I'm really proud of what this has turned into. And somehow glad that the software gave me a chance of redoing it, even if I was disliking that idea at first.

Well, this scene was surprising the fastest to animate of all until now. Ok, it's not that surprising, since it hasn't that much dialogues and instead of using a mouth, Seu Tomé's lip sink is made with his moustache, so it let things quicker. And Edmundo isn't even talking. So I just made him blinking. I didn't like that much how this scene turned anyway. I think it I have more time I'm going to fix it as I want it to be.

I count this days as one since I was working so hard in that scene that I could barely sleep to count that it's been to days. I didn't have a proper time to stop and said that I produce.
Anyway, it was really difficult do this scene, I don't think it was as quite difficult as the scene of the crowd, but I think if I would do that scene again and this one, this would take more time than the other one, since now I know better how to use Toon Boom then what I knew at that time when I was making it.
I have to plan better my nexts story boards, because I noted something in this one that was a problem to me. I wasn't counting of Edmundo taking that long to start talking, and even in the animatic, the scene where edmundo lauches the paper airplane until it arrives Pituca's eye and Gordo having a idea (yes it was all happening at the same time), lasted long compared to any other scene in the animatic. Probably my mistake in it, was wanting to all this things happen at the same time, it is difficult to pay attention at it all. But even so, it was good for me to deal with more characters moving in the same scene at the same time. To know how it is to animate something like this, since to tell stories I can't just focus in one character forever. It's a necessary skill to animate.
Another thing, maybe I made Gordo eat his toast to fest, and it would feel more natural the toast last long and instead of swallow it, he could take some bites and be chewing a little more in between one bite and other.
The lip sink of Edmundo was my first one hearing a sound, since the other that I've made didn't require a proper sound, since it's not supposed to be saying anything. And I'm proud of the results, but I think I'll have to pay more attention to how lips moves while where talking in portuguese, because the only references that I found was to made one in english, and some letters has a different way to pronounce in a language to other, so it's better to pay more attention for next times.
Another thing, I think it would be good if I had tried to put some close in Edmundo while he was talking after we see all the room and they standing there, he doesn't appear that much in that scene and feels like he's a little forgotten, even if of course i wanted the spotlight to be in Gordo, but anyway it's important to show a little more those details. If I have some more time, I'm planning on reviewing the cameras in that scene.

In this next scene it's probably one of the most difficult ones. Since instead of just one character that has to be animated blinking, talking or whatever this time there are three. And isn't just that, the close ups with the camera that I choose were difficult to handle, like the hand grabbing the toast, the toast jumping until the hand as well and this kind of thing. And today was pretty much what I did.And even if was just that I had a lot of problems to just do it.
Firstly, it took me ages to figure out the quantity of frames to look like the toaster was pushed to the air, and not like it was floating until the hand. For some reason I was being a little too careful with the frames, so I was moving the toast in a slower way then what I wanted. So I started of making them go faster in more spaces between the keyframes, and trying to not be too careful with them.
Another thing was the hand. I need it to move together in the peg, but if I did it, or the toaster would be in front or in the back. It hasn't no between, and in that way it didn't looked like Gordo was grabbing the toast to eat it. So, after thinking a lot, I realise that I could copy the part of the hand in that exactly position that it has to be in that frame, in order to be in front of the toast and the rest behind it. It seems obvious but took me hours to realise it, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it with pegs, but even if it has a way I don't know yet.
There were another problem that made this two seconds occupy a lot of my time, time enough to be called a whole day (yes, because today I could only do the two seconds when the toast is flying and gordo grabs it, the two first frames of that scene after "da obra de joão carlos marinho" appears on the screen).
The problem was, the toast and the toaster, because technically speaking, the toast should be inside of the toaster, but the toaster itself wasn't an object, but a background, and I didn't want to have to redram the toast to them float in the air and gordo grabs it, I wanted to use a peg to make things easier. So my first try was to use the image again and erase some things, to have like to equal layers, but one behind the toast and the other one in front of it. But it didn't function like I wanted, for some reason images in toonboom are just considerate images, you can't edit them just as how you can edit the drawing layers that you do in the app. It's something you can't change.
So, I had to think in another way to do it, and I thought that a drawing layer would be perfect for it. Or course, not really perfect, since it wouldn't have the proper tools to draw like the app that I made the draw, but it looks like a proper toaster to me, and this is what matters.
Now that I'm writing this I feel dumb, it would be better if I just edited the background in a drawing app instead of drawing it again in toon boom. Well, I'll think about it to next time.

I thought that after today everything would be easier than the previous days, since this last scene is the one with more seconds. And principally because the scene after that had just 4 seconds. I was wrong, again. I wonder why I think that everything is going to be just as I planned, there's always some kind of issue related to the program or things that I forgot for some reason.
And one of them were, Mister movements. He has a lot of movements at the same time, such as his clothes, his face, his hair, his mouth, his eyes, his eyebrows.. And it is everything at the same time, so I had to do a lot of layers and in each of them pay a lot of attention to every tiny detail that was bothering me, and also, was my first time doing something like this, so of course it took me a lot of energy. And it was something of like, just one second. But as it was my first time doing something like this, of course it would took me that long, as you can see, almost two days. And this is going to let me crazy, since it is just one scene, and after that I have to still animating two!
What's a problem, since that scene only have something like, 4 seconds, and the others ones has something like, 10 at least, which is the case of next one that is a camping scene.
One difficult that I'm having is with pegs, since one part of the arm some times shows in front, but other times i want another part to appears like it. Which is funny about this, is that this doesn't show when you're doing the line, just with colours. Actually the problem is, I want the front arm to be in the first layer, but at the same time, to everything move togheter, it has to be linked in the actual arm peg, so it's being a issue. Well, I already resolve it, but it gave me a lot of headaches. Currently, now I was super happy that I could finally finish it and resolve this problems, which i resolve with a layer that would fill the gaps without paint that the arm left cause i couldn't move layers around thanks to the peg.
Anyway, I thought i was over and that I could finally move the camera, but i was forgeting one keyframe from my storyboard that Mister appears in perfil, that was a really important scene counting with the anticipation principle of 12 principles of animation, that before you do some kind of movement, you show that you're going to do this, and this was the function of that keyframe, so... I couldn't just gave up on this and move to the next one, besides, it would just proove that im not ready to handle with the unknown, and this is the only way to improve, to face your fears as you can. So, with this in mind, here I am expending two entirely days in just one second. I really hope not to forget anything else next time.

I could finish it.. It's a miracle. And somehow funny, since just that second took me two days, and the other three took me just one. Is funny how time is relative in animations. Today was a day that I was fully satisfied with all that I've had produced, since it was a rare day that I produce a lot and even so could find a time to rest and sleep a little more, so then I could produce a lot next day with all my energies back to my body.
Recently, I've been watching a lot of animatics while I'm working, usually songs animatics that I can see some times while I have to think or rest a little to go back to work. And something I've learned from them, put as much detail as you can in your animatic, even the lipsick, movements, you don't have to do something perfect, but show movements using some doodles is a good idea, and the perfect example where I use this knowledge, was in that second part, where the camera changes in that scene. When you can see he getting up from the coach. It was much faster then what I expected, for me it would take ages just like the other scene, but what I wasn't expecting was that in that scene, I put a lot of keyframes, so I could just trace them and between this keyframes, just draw that part using onion skin. (really helpful!!). I think that's why it was so much faster to me, gosh I wish I knew how important and crucial an animatic was before I started doing this. I would have so much time left.

Ok! Just one more scene to go!
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.
In just one day I was able to finish a whole scene, and it isn't a scene short like Mister's or one of the album, it is a almost ten seconds one! With THREE characters moving and talking. AND EVEN FIRE! And even so, I could finish. I think I'm getting used to it. And I'm really proud how it looks, principally the lipsinks (im getting good at this), and the expressions of Edmundo at the beginning. And of course, the fire.
Initially I thought that do that fire would take a lot of effort and technique, but it turns out that I could do it only with my visual library. The only thing that I regret about this thing is that river at the background (it was supposed to be a river), i didn't know that i couldn't move that image in toonboom, but if i knew, probably I would try to export in other way, or just not put this in the background and animate, just like I did with the fire. If I had more time i would definitely adjust that.
Actually, the backgrounds itself were a problem here, since sometimes they lose quality, I don't know yet a way to resolve it, but I'll look for future projects.
Anyway, what I wanted to talk about is another thing, that is keeping me worried about the future of that animation.
As you can see, suddenly Edmundo changes his had to looking front to perfil without a decent animation. And Gordo's food that was a fish is now just a little tail. It all happens for a reason. The part before that, it was supposed to have a closeup in Edmundo, so we could see him talking better, just like I could have done with the toys scene that would look a way better, but I didn't. And I have a reason for this, that even looking to my previous scenes and to internet I could find a way to resolve it. The camera isn't working, i mean, it appears in the network view, but not in the part with the layers (i don't know if it has a name) and i tried everything to make it work, but it wasn't. And I had already done a lot of the animation, so there was no way that I would do everything from zero. I decided that I'm going to edit this when I have all scenes done (just one more to go!), because i have to finish this as soon as possible.

AND THE ANIMATION PART IS OFICIALLY OVER MY FRIENDS! I just had to edit everything, sub and then its ready! I can't believe it. I thought this scene was going to be easy, since it has just two keyframes, and here was my mistake. Of course it wasn't, the audio had like, almost 10 seconds (7 more precisely), and Mister with just 4 seconds had a lot more keyframes, this was just a mistake. I had to put more expressions maybe in the characters while doing it, and also some lipsink previews, but I didn't. Even so, I'm really proud of it, principally of Gordo's panick expression and Berenice's expressions in general.
Another fun fact, for some reason my Toon Boom was running in 24 FPS instead of 12, which was what I was using until then, but only when I was at Berenice's part, not in Gordo's anymore. And it was strange to me, the lip sink was taking too long to be done, but at least was so fluid and more beautiful then ever before, so I can't say that I didn't like it. Anyway... but when I notice it, I had to put everything back to normal again, so I had to gave up in that lip sink, and I was really proud of it, it's a shame.
Another thing that I wanted to reflect, now that I did a animation, when I look to a animation everything feels different, some animations that I thought that were "bad"or "lazy", when I look to it right now I feel like it must had take ages to do. And how movements in traditional animations, just like Disney's are incredible. I want to try for next times something more like this, with all the body moving. Anyway, that's in the future, right now I'm glad that I was able to finish it.
