At the beginning of the book, Elie had a not so great relationship with his father. Elie plays off his dad as not wanting him to practice the religion until he was older. I now know that could've been an attempt to save his life by not practicing jewish religion and could cause the nazis to not bring him along to the camps. But, that didn't work and as the book progresses we see that Elie's dad really does care for Elie. He doesn't want his only son to die. Their bond builds and builds while Elie's faith in his Jewish beliefs crumble and fall apart.

After being taken away from his mother and sisters, it seems to be that his father cares very deeply about Elie and is willing to give him weapons such as a knife and a spoon to survive. Even when his father is weak he gives Elie what Elie needs and vice versa. Additionally, being surrounded by death and the threat of losing each other has made them realize how much they need and want each other.
