The most common description of beauty is that it is in the eye of the beholder. But there are also other elements to beauty. For example, beauty makes you smile, beauty is in the imperfections, simplicity, in nature, colors, and many more. But what I want to focus on, in this exhibit, is that beauty is in the unexpected things. So, buckle up, because we are going on an adventure!

Did you know that Kathakali is mostly performed by men? They play all kinds of different roles, and their face paint tells you about their personality! It is a traditional South Indian dance from the 1800s. This form of dance passes down legends from generations ago. It was created by a man named Mahakavi Vallathol Narayan Menon. You can see Kathakali dancers at the Onam festival, which celebrates the rice harvest. One of the many ways that Kathakali is beautiful is the elaborate costumes. The dancers have big crowns decorated with beads and colorful thread, lots of gold jewelry, and strange face paint. The face paint design and colors are so unexpected! This is called variety. Variety is a principle of art that adds something interest to your piece. In this case, it’s the costume.

This is an adorable picture of Mrs. Rabbit and her sons, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail. It was made by Beatrix Potter, who is a writer, artist and botanist. If you really think about it, bunnies acting like humans is pretty strange right? But that’s the beauty of it! Something that makes this piece even more beautiful, is that it has texture. Texture is an element of art that makes something look like you can feel it. For example, the background. You can see there is the texture of dirt, and if you reached out, you could feel it. Some people might not like this picture, maybe because they don’t like bunnies, or it reminds them of unhappy times. This is where beauty is in the eye of the beholder comes in. We all have our own preferences of beauty, and for different reasons.

Wow! Look at that dog! Bet you didn’t know it is made out of flowers. It was made by Jeff Koons in 1992. He named it “Puppy.” This sculpture is huge, with colors that a dog wouldn’t usually have, which is quite odd, yet beautiful. Koons said that he hoped it would instill confidence in the people that would look at it. Something that makes this sculpture beautiful is the shape. Shape is another element of art that is all about, well, shape! Organic shapes are freeform, and geometrical shapes are named shapes, like a square. You can see the outline of organic shapes that were created when the flowered were placed. When you look at this piece, your brain will immediately try to figure out who it is. For me, I see my dog. Here’s what’s going on in your brain. Your eyes see the art, then, neurons travel through your body to your brain to tell you what you’re looking at, and one of the stops it makes is the temporal lobe, which controls facial recognition. Then, your temporal lobe finds out who that person/animal in the painting is, even if it is someone/something you don’t know, your brain will find a match for the person/animal in the photo.

Awww...Doesn’t that cute little snail make you smile? More like large snail though, it’s HUGE! It was made out of glass fiber by Paul McCarthy and Jason Rhoades in 2007, and it is on public view in Munich, Germany. Something that makes this art piece even more impressive is the harmony. Harmony is a principle of art that makes things match. In this sculpture, you can see that the gray of the snail’s body goes well with the brown shell.

Would you look at that! It looks so real, doesn’t it? It looks like the woman is creating the light. But, it is actually just a visual trick! If you take a camera, and use long exposure while moving a light, it will twist the light around to create cool shapes. This photo was taken by Michalis Ppalis using the technique called light painting photography. The light is so unexpected, and it’s part of what makes it so beautiful! But another way that it shows beauty is emphasis. Emphasis is a principle of art, and it is the the focus of your art piece. In here, it is the woman.

Now this is a piece of art that I made myself. I went outside in my backyard and took photos of nature, then put them together. Who knew you could find such beautiful things in your backyard? These photos all show contrast. Contrast is another principle of art that happens when there are opposites. In this collage, it is light and shadows. In each photo there is light, but also shadows.
