It all started in 1492 when Christoffel Columbus discovered America. After that a few countries followed like England, Holland and France. England had most states at the east coast and managed to hold them for a long time. In 1760 there were 13 English colonies in America who mostly controlled themselves but stayed loyal to the English king. England held many wars against France and that results in the king of England having no money. The king ordered the colonists in America to pay taxes to the king but they where against that new rule. As a result of that protest, England sent soldiers to America to force the colonist to pay. The colonist wouldn`t let that happen so all the representatives came together and formed an army against the English army with as leader George Washington. In 1775 the war between the English colonist and England started. Because of the help of Spain and France the English colonists won the war. During the war on the 4th of July in 1776, the representatives of the 13 English colonies declared themselves independent of England. Not until 1783, England acknowledged that the English colonies where independent and the war was finally finished after 9 years. After 1783 when the English colonies became independent after all these years, all thirteen colonies became independent and control their own colony but they were all still united in a union. A new country was created, the United States of America. In 1789 there was a leader chosen for this new country, George Washington. The man who led the colonist to their freedom.

Our own traditions

The USA has just as any other continent certain traditions that are very import to their people. Most of these traditions are celebrated in most countries in the world but some of them not or not as big as in the USA. First of all we start with the tradition that is first on the schedule for this year, Halloween. Halloween is a very popular tradition which is brought to the USA by Irish immigrants. The day was about remembering the souls who did not made it to heaven, that’s why people use skulls among other symbols of death things as a symbol for Halloween. People decorate their houses with pumpkins that have scary faces, spiders, ghosts or dolls that look like zombies to give off a scary ambiance.

Now a day’s people dress up in scary, weird or original outfits to scare each other or attend a party. The children dress up and go out to trick-or-treat. This means that they go from door to door trying to collect candy. Any person who refuses to give candy gets a house full of toilet paper or some eggs to the window.

After Halloween there is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November to celebrate the end of the harvest season. Thanksgiving is a big thing in the USA. People from all over the continent go to their parents home to celebrate with their whole family thanksgiving. One of the first things people think about when they hear thanksgiving is turkey. Thanksgiving is always celebrated with a big turkey, some sweet potatoes and other seasonal food which you’re going to eat cozy with the whole family. Last of all for this year people in the USA also celebrate on the 24th and 25th of December Christmas Eve and Christmas Day very big. People decorate their houses with mistletoes, Christmas trees, a lot of lights, Santa Claus figure. On Christmas Eve families hang stockings over the fireplace so santé could fill them with presents. On Christmas Day there is a big family dinner, just the same as thanksgiving but this time without the turkey.

The USA is well known for his high variation of different kitchens because there living many people with different ethnicities in the USA. Kitchens like Indian, Chinese, France, Italian, Japanese and go on. But what is typical American food? Down below I summed up a few for you. We start off with the well known sparerib. Nothing is more delicious than a greasy, juicy big piece of meat which has marinade for hours and that prepared on a barbeque or open fire. Especially Texas and Dallas are known for their delicious spareribs.

Second of all we have the hotdog. On every corner in New York you find a hotdog stand were you can enjoy your favorite bun with sausage. But there are numerous variations of the hotdog. You also have the corndog (hotdog with fried crust), chili cheese dog (hotdog with chili sauce, beef, cheddar and union and that all on a bun). The most delicious hotdogs you can find in New Orleans at Dreamy Weenies. I definitely recommend it if you are in the area. Third of all we have the pancakes. The pancakes in the USA are a bit similar to the one in Holland but these are much thicker and are often eat for breakfast. We mostly eat pancakes with syrup, sugar or apples but in the USA people eat them with butter, maple syrup, peanut butter, whipped cream, jelly, honey and even with some fruit like banana or blueberries. Going on to the 4th one which are s`mores. S`mores are roasted marshmallows with on top a piece of chocolate between 2 crackers, so you get a marshmallow sandwich. It is so loved in the USA that there even is a national holiday for s`mores, on the 10th of august each year. And last of all we have the sliders. Sliders are small sandwiches who are mostly referred to mini hamburgers. Those are delicious at any time of the day because they are not as big as his big brother the normal burger. One place I would recommend for these delicious sliders is in Denver at Lou`s food bar. So when you are in the neighborhood you should definitely visit Lou`s food bar, believe me, you won`t regret it!
